You want pump in there for good.

Something that will fit around it and a wallop left, don’t need proper spanner just be careful it doesn’t slip and go through the rad.
525 has same M51, thats what my old starter came off. They threw them in loads of things even Omegas, there few variations though but you’ll know if it’s same one from quick look at what’s bolted to it

Yes, 525TDS or the Omega TD are the common ones. Some even had the 994 pump. Generally regarded as the most reliable engine BMW ever made, although slightly less so after Land Rover tinkered with it.

I had a £9 one , against Wammers warnings, and drilled a hole in it. Old one was acting like there wasn’t one in there but it was a bmw one.
Works well but it is chancing it. Now I know the symptoms of a dodgy stat I can change it if and when it needs it. If it jams il just take it out for the interim.

Hi Guys - been a while. Took Christmas off out of frustration.

Bloody F****** B******* Bloody S***** F******* water pump!

Norwegian matey on Youtube shows you how to gently tap a 32mm spanner to release the fan nut - and on his video it just comes loose. Not in my world!
Spent literally days tapping, then whacking the spanner with a lump hammer, tightened fan belt to lock the fan, even bought the special tool to hold the pump pulley in place so that you can get proper traction on the nut - all to no avail, and I'm no stranger to using a hammer. Went through two 32mm spanners, (spanner jaws opened and started to round the nut). Eventually - had to cut it off!:eek::mad::(

Now the fan is off I'm eventually starting to actually replace the pump.:)

We've been there. Same with mine the first time. Bent the holding tool and spanner. No need to do anything other than nip it up when you put it back.

Think it was you that had the pic of your rad full of clay so I’m not terribly surprised ;)

Me? Yes, been there. Bakes on like ceramic.

Oh, you mean Mark? Think he's been there too! Hence his snazzy bespoke radiator.

Or Nick? If he's been off-roading on Salisbury plain he'll be well acquainted with mud plastering everything up!

yup. That chalky lime mud, really sticky and bakes hard. Basically a wet day out on Salisbury Plain is like driving your car through successive tanks of sloppy lime mortar. You drive through one and get your radiator and everything else submerged to 20’’ in lime mortar, drive for a mile or two in the dry so that it can really set hard, then drive through another one, repeat all day until there is more mud baked into every radiator grille, every bearing, brakes and pads, discs, vent and drain hole - and the drive home to allow it time to set properly.

New viscous fan is silly money, AC fan mod may be best option for you now. I had to use big grips and strong spanner first time, once it’s off little coppaslip and itl be okay from there on

How does the fan mod work? The air con does not work any way and I have been wondering about removing the air con rad altogether- is that feasible?

Is there another mod for an electric fan instead of the viscous one? At the moment I think I can re-use the existing viscous fan as the nut was not damaged when we cut through the old water pump spindle, however, they are a pain and now is the time to make the mod if i’m going to at all.
