Sold my 1995 V8 and sold my 1995 300 TDI.
Bought a 1999 registered D1 manual V8.
I did some repairs to get it thru mot, new downpipes with cats, lambda sensors, anti roll bar refurb, new brake pipes, simple refurb of the front calipers, cleaned up discs, new coolant header tank, replacement ECU, repaired an exhaust manifold.
So all the lights worked, windscreen washers ok and the front end was in reasonable condition.
Well........ I did a quick once over before taking the beast for mot and found a rotten body mount under rear cross member, rear floor was ropey - very ropey! and fuel pipes on the edge!! I would need to patch the usual rot area on rear door arch area.
SO I have decided to repair restore the rear of the beast and 'get it right' for the mot
HOW and HOW did this vehicle get an mot over the last 2-3 years!!!

Sounds ever so familiar lol

Love the 3.9 and with it being a manual will be a nice drive too.
 
I really like the V8's maybe an addiction or something.
Work done this week, a good tidy up, sort out the good parts from the bad so far and pack them away for painting over next few months.
Bought a new old stock fuel return pipe - bargain £60 delivered, huge box and very light, swmbo had a good laugh when it was unpacked!

Here are some pics of the rusty rear body, The more I have dug the worse it gets mm
So after some thoughts of Pick up conversion or restore I still could not decide.
Last week I thought OK I really would like a Defender and yes I could get one when SWMBO retires in 2 years, I could convert the Discovery into a 100' Defender.
I have looked into the legalities and I will have enough points to keep the registration number.
I have spoken to my insurance company I use for my motorhome and they will insure it once it is MOT'd and fully checked over with pics supplied to them.

Pretty standard stuff I’m afraid mate!! Seems they’re all rotting there. Note, in your picture it shows the trapeze shaped boxes that cap the tubular cross member on the chassis rails. You have a hole in at least one of these and I’d suggest the rail underneath with be holey.
I’d think hard about gutting it and turning into a pickup - if I went back I’d probably buy as standard and clean as I could and do a fairly standard nice looking build. But, it’s your build and good job on getting stuck in! Look forward to updates
 
As Above - all pretty standard - LR's corrosion promotion design and build in action :rolleyes:

I'd also be sorting that out and leaving it standard - there won't be many left soon, and the value will rise....

If it helps, the rear body on mine was worse than that ( chassis only had surface rust :confused: ) ....

The one advantage you've got is that it is a 5 door - the 3 doors are a better vehicle, but they rust way worse - ask me how I know :rolleyes: :mad::mad::mad: :rolleyes: :D
 
I don’t actually think it al looks so bad, especially if the chassis is good. You’ll do what, half a grand on boot floor bits and new rear arches? Maybe a bit more.
the inner rear quarters are an easy fix too.
If you got the full boot floor kit, you could honestly get that sorted quite quickly. Again, if chassis is good.
Going off your profile pic she doesn’t looked chavved or bashed up. Defo get her looking like a time warp plus a v8 manual. Couple optional extras it will be so worth it :cool:

Yep, they sure do ;) - I know it's hard to believe, but they do - certainly the ones I have worked on have done - all on their ***ing own anorl :mad::eek::mad::confused::rolleyes:

You are spot on with your comments about the chassis as well.

D1's - giving us welding practice for years and years ....... and years to come :rolleyes:
 
I do see what you are saying, the truck is bog stock except for LPG
The only special feature this one has it was registered in late June 1999 so must make one of the last D1’s registered unless anyone knows better?

Works out about £450 for the panels I will need plus gas bottles
I have not taken the doors off yet so......

A and B posts are probably end less now - but not hard to fix - I'd genuinely start with a proper look at the chassis - got any mobile sandblasters in your area - or take it somewhere ?

Thing is, if you do it right, and look after it, then it will last 40 years...... and is only going up in value....

At least the rear top of mine is still intact
Disco1BFG, I knew a while back the truck was generally in OK condition, I have given it a good once over this afternoon, The sills are in great condition with just the ends to plate up, A and B posts are complete with no rot.
Took the wings off, lights out, bumper off and the grill out, slam panel is great with only the underside to repair, front body mounts will need doing - easy job.
Inner wing top rails are all intact - no rot, inner wing engine side flat panels need replacing and quite a bit rot in the kick panels.
Chassis appears all fine except for the rear X member

So all seems fixable to be honest - looks like I will be doing some pics of the rebuild and I have not gone past the point of no return haha :D:D
I will keep and eye out for a V8 maybe in spring - put into storage for my 100' hybrid.
Onward!!

Good call IMHO - Damn fine vehicle, and worth doing :)

Colour is nice anorl :)
