Hi everyone

I would like to start a thread on a rebuild of a 110 defender I am about to undertake

Please move thread if I'm wrong location

Basically this is my 1992 110 Land Rover purchased from Withams military auction and I aim to put it back to a regular daily used defender. The engine (unfortunately) is only the 2.5 NA engine, but it only has 44k kms on the clock from new, spending most of its life in the falklands. Have to say it is unbelievable how much sand was on and in every book and cranny on the chassis!

For those who want to see a vehicle remaining in military guise this thread is not for you. My Intention is to convert this car to suit my family's needs and I cannot wait to start.

The 2 bad parts of the car found when I got a good look at it at home was the drivers side outrigger was rotted through and needed replaced and the passenger footwell also needed replaced. Simple replacement parts bought online and garage have advised the rest is very solid so it is worth saving and protecting!

I have just had these replaced and now the car is in paint. Hopefully I will get it back in 4-6 weeks as the painter is fitting it around there other work!

I will post some other pics soon and update this post over the next few days.

I am looking at the 300tdi engine upgrade for the car and would love to get some details on gains from those who have already done it. Will search the forum when I get to that stage!

Sent the car to garage for welding and paint 6 weeks ago and still some time before I expect it back. I really am getting withdrawal symptoms and cannot wait to get it back!

This sounds like a great project. I shall follow the thread with interest. I can't comment on the 300 Tdi engine, but I have a 200 Tdi, which I find excellent. Good luck!

I replaced the 2.5na in my ex mod 90 with a 300tdi and the difference is night and day!
Much more relaxing to drive and safer too ~ especially joining dual carriageways, motorways etc. Fit pas too as low speed manoeuvring can be a real battle sometimes!!!
Great looking truck!
Looking forward to seeing it evolve!!

Whilst bored waiting for the return of the Defender I thought I would add a few pictures of work done to date

You can see here the state of the chassis when I got the car home but to be fair a wire brush and several different rust eating products and it begins to transform

It also was surprising the amount of surface rust that was removed

Well I havnt updated for a while but progress has been made!

Last week I got the car through its MOT and I am now trying to register the vehicle! Only one minor problem when I came to look for the engine number I cannot see any markings. On the from passenger side of the engin

Any ideas or suggestions on how i can find the engine number for an exmod Land Rover....

Thanks for your reply I havnt yet fitted the 300tdi.

But I managed to find it at the back of the engine 11j so it is the 19j bottom end.

Anyway, looking for a bit of advice on refitting a petrol tank. Only 4 bolts but very awkward haha.

The tank is the rear typ. And I am guessing it would be best to fit the two smaller ones at the rear first and then Secure the front but any advice appreciated

Now that job is a pain in the behind!

Some jobs you need 2 people and when you only have one then you have to use legs to lift the jack and arms head as I am sure most of you already know. haha

All done though on to tightening it all up and fitting pipework.

well after fitting the tank I decided to keep going to fitted the sound deadening

Think the back is quite a transformation! I have panoramic windows to go in soon and forward facing rear seats!

How's it going?! I'm planning on putting a 1.4 transfer box, standard R380 then the 300tdi in mine. I want to see how yours goes! :)
