I think you’re correct. By the time I’ve bought new washers and bushes I might as well buy the whole shock.
Are the Britpart Borg ones ok? I’m not going to off-road comp it or anything but it will spend most of its time working on the farm loaded up or towing.

Related, but I’m working on the springs. Other than powder coating what’s a good paint that anyones used? Just chassis paint, or stonechip or something plastic?

I don’t know much about Britpart shocks, but I think @jamesmartin fitted them without much complaints. I just cleaned up and painted the front springs on my 90 and they look great. I used paint I’ve had for ages called Vinylast. How long it “lasts” I don’t know yet.

I have fitted the britpart super gas shocks to my 90, slightly hard ride when empty but fine when laden or towing. Been on a couple year and been fine. veofre that I had plain boge ones which did about 7year of use before I randomly blew one off road

Ampther vote here for the basic britpart shocks, had them fitted to mine for several years and managed a trip around morocco no issue.

So I think I’ve narrowed my choice down to these based on price;
Britpart Basics at £20 each
Britpart Cellular Dynamic at £42 each
Britpart SuperGaz at £35 each
Billstein £36 each
Terrafirma TF117 at £36 each

it’s still a long list - does anyone have any other comments about any of these?

I'm happy with the supergaz shocks got them with the heavy duty springs and was only like £190 all in. For that price treated myself to new turrets and seats etc

Personally I have tried the adjustable +5" TF shocks and they failed within 1500 MIles. So I would never recommend any TF shocks.

I helped fit these exact ones to my bros 110 at the weekend, wasnt sure how robust they would be to be honest. Think for the same price I could do 2 sets of the gaz shocks.

Was a very quiet year, so only did 1500 miles and it was less than 9 Months from fitting. Luckily got a new set under warranty, which are now sat in the garage in their shiny boxes.

They sit inside the rear spring and are held in place with a round plate on the top with an M10 bolt.
To get them off you need to undo the bolt and they come off when you articulate the axle.
A few years ago I went over a bank and the spring got out of its seat. There was a rubbing noise and a mile or so later a very loud BANG. Since then i've always had spring retainers.

Nightmare! I will get a set and look at getting them fitted will have a fair amount of weight when done so its the last thing I need.

Terrafirma come with free rust that appears within 6 months....and nice auto rust shield caused by them leaking oil from the seals give them a swerve ( ask me how I know!

)

Fox shocks all the way for me, the ride is a class of its own

Sadly, I too have a terrible experience with TF shocks - a rear broke off (!!) whilst towing - it was very much less than ideal .....

.... as was the free rust - chr*st on a bike - it's a D1 - I've got enough ***ing rust

.....

SWMBO's D1 had BP SG's on when we bought it - they seemed really good - so I've fitted them all around on mine too .... they are a slightly harder ride, but otherwise excellent IME.

If you have retainers on top & bottom off the springs will this affect the droop of the axle when off roading?
