Rear Shock Mount

Hello All!
Just removed some very old rear shocks and on one of them the shock had worn through the washers and worn the mount on the axle. See picture.
I was wondering what your thoughts were on whether or not it needs replacement or it will be ok with new washers etc?

Just weld a thick washer in its place

A common issue and as mentioned above sorted by welding a heavy washer over the hole.

Ok Thank you both! That is great news

I’ll have a google to see if I can buy one. Otherwise I’ll have to make one.
You guys might be able to advise on something else. I have a suspension stop mount that has blown out due to rust and I need to get it off. Is angle grinding the best method?
I’ve got a few welding jobs so my plan is to do the prep and then get a mobile welder in to fix things back up.

I welded in a thick washer but flush, the nut is hard enough to get started when refitting the damper without increasing the metal thickness.

I'd use two washers and check them for wear once a year.

cut hole out and add weld in a washer of same thickness as bracket,or replace bracket

That’s a tidy job! Great example. That’s what I’ll aim for!
Not being an engineer.......how did you do the countersink so accurately?

I guess you mean the hole in the axle for the washer?
I got the washer from a farm supplies place which was the correct thickness then scribed round it in the correct position, then used a cut down blade in a jigsaw to cut it out. This was a front axle and access wasn't great but doable, rear axle may be easier or worse. I can't remember the washer size before you ask, sorry, I possibly also had to open up the washer hole to suit the bush, can't remember that either but that would have been easy enough using a rotary file in a drill.
Might be easier to buy a new bracket for you but my axle casing had been corrosion coated and I didn't want to grind too much off, preferring a localised repair.

A step drill bit or hole saw would come in handy. If you want the hole to be accurately drilled you may need to tack a bit of plate over the hole so you can punch a pilot hole. @84ninety

Angle grinder is what most use but as it is driver side remember the loom to the rear light's ect is in that chassis leg. Loom is usualy pulled forward clear of the work area with a length of plain wire attached to pull it back after work is done.

Yes as i'm not a welder and I've got to get someone in i'm going to see how much just to replace the whole bracket.......I have have no paint work to worry about !!!!

Just been under my 110 doing a job and had a look at the axle damper mount. Looks a doddle to get at compared to the front one and much more clearance for a jigsaw blade between bracket and axle tube.

Ok thank you. I have a local welder coming to have a look Sat morning. I’m hoping we can weld a washer in just like your example. Fingers crossed!!

Blinking welder never turned up.......drives me mad........don't know how these people stay in business!
I will up date when I have found another one an have news!
In the meantime i'll be continuing cleaning and painting the underside! What fun!!
