Shocking rear shock issue

Is the A frame knuckle ok? Theory is axle should only go up & down & not wear an oval hole in that motion.
If A frame has movement diff nose will go up & down and causing wear.

Could the shocks be bottoming out ?

The comper had double front shocks type fitted to the rear think GL parts(made carrying spares easier )

The position of the shocks means that they're not going straight up and down - there's always some lateral force on the bushes. It's always worth trying to give the other joints in the suspension a wobble, of course, but I suspect it's just that the bushes are made of something unsuitable. If they were the standard ones that came in the box with the shock absorbers, they're apt to be a bit cheap and cheerful. I'd try and source some slightly more expensive ones and give it another go. The different manufacturers differ in terms of what they give you to fit the shocks. The expensive Konis I fitted about ten years ago had metal top hat washers and the bushes themselves were shaped so as to go in between the pin and the seat. The mid-priced Boge ones I put on the other day just came with rubber bushes, plus cup washers to go on the outside of the bushes.

I think this is certainly a big part of the problem. the bushes I had just fitted have virtually disintegrated. I have ordered some superpro polys to hopefully last a little longer. Of course once the bush fails there is nothing keeping any of it in place and tight so it will move around and wear the hole.

I'm a bit confused with this ...

The bushes have a top and bottom washer, so 4 washers in all at the lower shock mount.
The two middle washers stradle the mount and fit in the hole with a small lip.
The hole through these thicker washers is slightly larger than the 'pin' and they have an outer 'lip' that holds the bush.
The top and bottom washers fit tight to the pin, are thinner and inverted relative to the two center washers and also have a lip that holds the bush.
Held in place with the M10 (M12 ?) nylock nut on the bottom tightened to around 75NM.

Does that describe your setup @dag019 ?

Yes that is my setup. The two washers either side of the, now once again oveled, bracket are top hat profile to sit into the bracket hole and not move. There is then a bush on each "bracket" washer and a differently profiled final washer to support the bush. Looking at what has happened this time it is the same as what happened last time just much quicker. The bottom bush has worn (this time disintegrated completely), this loosens the whole structure and allows the top hat washer to drop out of the hole and then as the axle moves there is nothing holding the shock pin correctly centred in position so it wears the bracket. I have ordered some super pro poly bushes that are supposedly a direct replacement for part number 552818 and should not just disintegrate immediately lie the cheap rubber replacements.

Below is the setup I have and the part numbers I am using.

Swap to eye to eye shocks. Seen on competition trucks. Have a look at Gwyn Lewis, has adapter kits.
I used to have those when I had the lift kit on and returned back to the pin when I returned to standard height. I think the bracket damage is a symptom of lower bush failure, and the issue I have is lower bushes just keep failing. Not sure if this is poor quality parts or a larger issue.
When I did get bushes last time form a local supplier that was new to me they did make a comment that whatever bush I fit to the lower shock would not last long. However I lost a lot of faith in their view and opinion after that when they then challenged me saying I was wrong when I said the shock bushes are the same front and back for my 110 (they were struggling to find rear bushes on the shelf). When I pushed back they made a dismissive comment about my 15 years of knowledge of my own vehicle was not as good as 20 years of being land rover mechanics. I was annoyed enough that I came home and double checked I was correct!

Agree with you there, we do not have the people in parts supplies that know their stuff any more. Used to have a local chap who would sing out the part number of all the usual bits one would want for your Landy and then fetch it from the store.:vb-tup:

Quality of parts is another issue:confused: a lot of copy/fake substandard parts out there and trading standards look to take little interest in this despite it being a vehicle safety issue.

Have just fitted the super pro bushes. Have a little more faith that these will last longer however this is only temporary as I will need to repair the bracket eye again, and will now need a set of shocks as this time the pin has worn as well. One of the inner washers has also worn off most of its tophat to locate it so I will order another set of those as well. These are the bushes I removed, the lower one on each side is the one that has completely disintegrated and the upper was considerably shorter than the replacements having clearly compressed. These have been fitted for about 6k miles or nearly three months if you work on time. Am I expecting too much or is that just the current state of rubber parts that are unknown brand (guessing not genuine or OEM)?
