The only time a sedimentor should give you problems is if it's having to do a lot of what it's designed to do....... in which case it's a REALLY bad idea to remove it

Not true, the sedimentor casing goes porous, this allows the fuel lines to suck in air. I had massive problems with my 300TDi due to air in the fuel, I went through everything and it wasn't until I bypassed the sedimentor that I cured these issues. It ran fine without it, I'm not too sure why its there, the defenders dont have them and its the same engine...
 
If I had a diesel I would fit a sediment bowl in the engine bay before the fillter, Obviously a ****ed one is no good but they are good at wot they do and a good indication of how clean your fuel is, plus if you have no fuel in it you have a prob
