rear mounted winch on a TD5 110

Don't suppose you got a picture of how the tank it connected to the cross member?
Could you change it for a 90 fuel tank or would it be to much work?

Too much grief. It's connected by 2 bolts in the top centre of the crossmember.

I can't afford to lose any capacity on the tank. I'm actually looking at fitting an extended range tank under the wheel arch.

I rekon I'll just say sod it and fit the old front winch bumper to the rear.:(

Isee the plan Ratty, sounds good. If you can recover a 7.5 ton truck with a 2000 lb portable winch, I'm not going to worry about buying a cheapo Superwinch LP8500 any more.

If you bought the rear winch mount in the links above for £350 or so you could claim it against tax, which would mean it's nearly free... (I love it when the Gov helps out :) )just an idea as it does look the business!

Can you not put a valve on the PTO hydraulic pump and use another hydraulic winch on the rear?

I actually have a pto pump and valve set that will operate 2 winches sat in my shed. It's an electric pump that drives the hydraulics. I was going to fit it to my previous landy before it was attacked.

My new landy came with the pto already on it hence the obvious choice of adding the winch to go with it. I like the idea of multiple speeds. It is extremely handy when righting an overturned vehicle or manouvering a vehicle over sloping terrain. a hydraulic winch can also have the speed adjusted but when running on an electric pump it isn't as easy to do.

A hydraulic winch is far more expensive to buy too.

In the event of engine failure the electric winch can also still be used. where the pto one can't. As I have jump sockets on my landy with anderson connectors I can tap into another vehicles electrics to enable me to get myself out even if my landy isn't running itself.

Oi Ratty summat like this http://mysite.mweb.co.za/residents/moorea/images/grizzly0010.JPG Might be worth dropping the chap an email for the details.

That looks pretty good pikey. A lockable cover would also help protect it against theiving scum. I rekon I might make a cover to go over both winches.

I would of thought that one pikey posted would be a pain in the arse when greenlaning...

My TD5 is about 3" lower than my last 110 was on the back end. I'm gonna fit a set of HD +2" springs before it's mot in June. As it is at the moment the tow hitch is a nightmare and catches everything when offroading. If I leave it as it is I'll spend more time winching myself around the Glastonbury festival site than I will driving it.

Even with my winch bumper sticking out the back of my landy by 10" I wouldn't lose any rear end approach/departure angles.

Look in our gallery there is a neat one by landysteve Far too tarty for my mota tho. And I'm with Mseries3 Far too low to the ground. Everything is a compromise but I would have to seriously think weather to have a rear mounted winch if it stuck out or down. I saw a nice soloution on a hybrid at a comp the other day he had a pully system he could wnch from the front side or rear with minimal messing about about 30 secs to relocate the winch rope. Jai

There yare, Ratty - fit a couple of pulleys on the roof, one on each corner and yu can use the front winch to winch in any direction you like. You mite need a couple of strengthening plates tho:rolleyes:

Being a 110, and with having a drop hitch anyway my rear clearance is already crap.

That piccy's of the douglas motors rear winch bumper. It's £350. then you need to get the tow attatchment that brings the bill to £500. I do like em but they're way to pricey for my pocket.

That winch system with the pulleys that you're on about is often found on fire engines too. I'd rather have 2 winches as I can use one as an anchor if needs be or for somewhere like weston-super-mare beach or Brean sands I have the added method of escape if i start getting in to difficulty while rescuing a bogged vehicle.;)

Fair point, The owner of the hybrid said he regularly winches 16 tonners up to his garage . The winch rope he said cost over a grand and he did say how long but can't remember off my head but it was on a spool approx 15 inches in diameter. He had the chassis custom made thicker than standard and then plated over in 3mm where possible and stregthening plates all over the front dumbirons and then waxoiled. It was a piece of kit I can tell you. Jai

Hope your chassis is good Ratty, else you'll end up with a 130 :)

No. I would like a 130 though.:p

I have considered getting shot of mine and getting another 300tdi though.

Are you so worried the TD5 will give out on you? that engine might be complicated but it's so overbuilt compared to most.

I really like those crew cab 130s, but decided security for my gear was more important.

Yep. If the slightest thing plays up on it it becomes a gutless liability.

I don't trust it. I've had trust in all my previous landys but not this one.
