Rear Head Lining Bowing - Re-securing options

Hi

I have a 2001 defender 90 CSW. The Rear headlining is in good condition but the support structure seems to have bowed over time, making the already marginal headroom for anyone unlucky enough to be in the back even less, and looking very untidy.

The main issue is around the alpine lights.

What are the best options to salvage the head-lining? I'm sure this has been covered before so any links to relevent threads would be appreciated.

This is pre-facelift being a late 2001 so doesn't have the bar. In fairness the centre is ok, just around the alpine lights where its bad.
 
I glued some stainless threaded rod along the top of the liner over the alpine windows, did not really help though it is still in place.
I reckon once the liner has gone/sagged, that is pretty much game over.
 
Not something I have done but have vague and distant memories of a thread on here where someone covered the back of the head liner in fiberglass resin to give it a more solid structure?

This is a good idea, Mine is tight against the alpine seals but can't quite hang in there and drops out, so a little extra support will help. Worst come to the worst I'll just make a small prop centrally but that would look a little untidy.

If going as far as taking it out and trying to repair it I doubt it will ever go back in neatly!

I disagree with that. Having replaced the headlining in mine a couple of times even ones removed form different vehicles and refitted can be put back neatly enough. Mine is a hard top so didn’t have a full length headlining originally. Bought a used one and fitted no problem. Then did the seme again as part of the rebuild after the fire. Are long as you are careful there is no reason you cannot remove and replace to the same standard. Also if you remove it completely it is the ideal opportunity to restick the fabric to the headliner to stop it sagging.

Thats settled then, it will come out at some point, reinforce the hardboard/formwork that has bowed or and hopefully make a lasting job of it.
 
I'm watching this as I have the same issue in my 1985 LR90. I'm told to take it down and fix a cardboard/wood backing to it so it holds itself in place, but will watch and research a bit more before tackling it.
 
This is not a priority, having just knocked half the house down, but will get to it later in the year. Any updates from someone who gets there first will be appreciated!
