REAR DOOR GLASS FRAME REPLACEMENT

Hi
I have a 1988 4 door RR and would be grateful for some advice regarding the replacement of the rear door glass frames.
Is it possible to remove and replace these without removing the glass or anything else? If so, apart from undoing the bolts on the door frame, are there any other steps I should follow?

i think to remove the glass, you have to remove the door frame as there is no access to remove the glass through the door, if you look at this picture of the inside of the door, with the trim removed, you'll see he only way to remove the glass is to take the door frame off.

it would stand to reason that if you want to remove the frame, the glass would be in place to do so. I'm just suggesting as i never removed the glass or frames from mine!

Thanks for the response. I only need to remove the frame to replace it and am hoping that I can do so without having to remove the glass or anything else.

its a range rover.

the bolts will be rusted in, or break off, or it will misfire after doing it

There are two bolts on each end of the door shell two bolts inside the door just below the arm rest bracket. one of the bolts is at right angles to the frame and fits into a small angled plate fixed to the curved part of the door, this is for the rear doors. The front ones are only fixed with two bolts at each end of the door shell. Once all bolts are undone the frame just lifts out. Make sure that the glass is in the lowered position as there wll be nothing to support the glass.

Locket, thanks for the detailed information. If I lower the glass fully and tape it to the door, is it likely to stay in place when I slide the frame out?

Yes the glass will stay in place with or without the tape.

At the bottom of the frame is a welded round bracket 30mm diam that the bolts screw into, you have to tilt the frame slightly to remove it.

And reattach the plastic weather sheet or you will be wondering where the rainwater in your footwells is coming from!
Common & puzzling issue on many cars - not just LR - after work done that requires their removal/unsticking.
Use butyl rubber strip (very sticky plasticine type stuff, comes on a roll) or silicone sealant etc will work at a pinch.
The one in the pic needs the tear repairing.
