Series 3 Rear cross member repair

There is a hole in the rear cross member , it's pretty big , I've squared it off and it's about the size of a mobile phone , I'm going to weld a patch in , however the good metal , ( and I have gone right back ) is not very thick , about 3mm , should I just order some 3mm steel patches from eBay to weld in ? Seems very thin , I think the previous owner had a bump in it and did a bad repair

I think it's only supposed be 3mm isn't it

Just seems a bit thin considering its potentially going to take impact but it does look as if it's 3 mm , I'll go with that , thanks

3mm is thicker than the rest of the chassis, which is closer to 1.6mm or less.

The bulkhead seems to be 1.6 but my chassis is about 2.5. The mil rear crossmembers are much thicker but 3mm should do fine if its a civvy.
