Really Poor Mileage

Only once, went to Blackpool on a charabanc when I wuz a lad. It want very intrestin, the waves were all pifflin an small there were no shipwrecks an nobody drownded 'fact nuffin to laff at at all. An I had a nose bleed when we went over the Pennines!

I had been speaking to Miniman before I bought me landy, and I think he'd be a bit stunned to see it under-performing. I just hope that it's down to a ****ty fuel gauge. Friday and 200 miles will tell :)

Fingers crossed

That's them convinced! Filling to the brim on Friday, and running for 200 miles, then filling to brim again. Fingers crossed it'll do 25-28, but it's not looking that way at the moment.

Just one thing. How many miles can you drive your landy with the fuel gauge totally out?

NOT FAR, don't push it much more than 20miles once it gets to that stage.

mmm, I'm going to have to have a good word with the garage. It does pull up hills, but I find that I have to come into thrid quickly and drop down to second in most cases

my engine is shagged? What can I do to get it back into nick without having to swap the whole block? Is re-conditioning all that effective?

Rebuilding an engine would make it as good as new if done properly and in fact in some cases better - more time spent on things, some people even go to the bother of perfectly balancing the crankshaft etc...

Change ALL your filters, unless you KNOW they have been done recently, air is important, no air = no burn!

I will check the filters in the morning :)

If the timing is buggered - wouldn't the engine be whirring up and down, and making horrible sounds? It runs as smooth as a nut

Definitely try the fuel and air filters. If they're all clogged up with ****e you'll notice an huge difference right away. It's also typical garage behaviour to claim to have changed these things when they haven't even lifted the bonnet:rolleyes:

If the timing is out it will still probably run like a sewing machine, and have about as much power. The timing in ALL these engines is deliberately set retarded - it starts injection a bit too late for our liking - because that way "they" can be sure the thing will not be too far advanced thus making clattery noises and bringing a non-paying job into the workshop.

I promise you this - if you get the timing set right ** for your engine ** by some punter who really takes the time to get it right, you will hardly believe how well your engine can go. Even a 2.5 N/A ends up pretty perky, and goes a lot further on every gallon.

I have explained here several times in the last two weeks how to do it.

So even though the engine sounds perfect, the timing might be out? How much do you recon a land rover specialist will charge to do the job?

Spanners and a good ear will do it... you only need to rotate the pump ever so slightly untill it runs well.

There is another post at the moment where someone has just done this.

The buggers will charge you a fortune, and the point I am trying to make is this - they WILL simply set the timing to the factory set marks, and it will run, but like a plug.

What YOU need to do is TUNE the timing perfectly for YOUR engine, and it WILL run like a dream afterwards. Several LandyZoners have had a go at it already. The word "FANTASTIC"! was used ...

Yeah, I've had a read but I still don't fully understand what to do. The garage restricted my fuel flow so that it would pass the MOT, but they said they didn't restrict it any further, as to reduce performance. Do I not need to touch my timing belt?

go to general landrover talk click on ex mod info page 2 scroll down and you'll find a link from charlsey there explaining it all and it is very easy. once I get my landie serviced I'll be doing the same and am a novice. by whats been written to good not to try. :)
