Hello,
Following on from my 60 quid in less than a week topic:

I have been told that I wont get much better than 17-20 MPG with my constant 4x4 2.5 N/A 90 by the garage that sold it to me (even though they said 27mpg before I bought it), but a whole load of you guys have said that I will. I don't know what to think! I haven't been speeding off, the tyres could do with a bit of air in them, perhaps even some harder tyres, and I have started lifting my foot well off the pedal, but it is still drinking. I went on a 20 mile ride again this morning, not many stops or starts, and pretty much 4th and 5th gear all the way, and it has yet again eaten away on the gauge.

The garage had restricted my fuel (to get it through the MOT) so that I have enough power, but not too much as to drain the fuel, or create smoke. They have also said that there is not much more they can do to get more mpg out of it.

I knew fullwell that I was not buying an economic car, but 17MPG is what fking V8's are getting, and they're huge! If it carries on like this, I may well have to sell up, and I've only had her sinse Friday :( I feel like crying.

Any more ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help

get urself a 200tdi disco 1 for £500, and stick the engine and transfer box in ur 90. should see you getting around 30mpg. if u want then take the rear axle of the disco as well so you have discs all round.

thats what im gona do to my 1987 90 as soon as i can afford a cheap disco!

if the garage have me4ssed with your fuel system id get someone else to take a look at it.
the n/a is a more economical engine than a 200tdi or a 19j td.
is it leaking from anywhere? is the fuel return blocked?

I drove from Torquay in devon to Hull in a 1984 110 2.5n/a. Loaded to the roof with tools, clothes books etc. it's a journey of about 350miles I averaged 28mpg. Cost me just short of £50. Your garage are either talking ****e or they've sold you a knackered landy take it back, spit your dummy and stamp your feet. till they sort it.

Get into the injection pump TIMING!

You should easily attain 25+ mpg, and damn near break 30 on a cruise.

Your engine m,ay be "timed" to the marks, but it is SICK in fact.

It needs that persoan touch.

Thanks for the positive heads up guys, I'm going to print this sheet out and keep it just in case I need to use you as backup when I confront them - is that OK with everyone?

Before I can be certain, I am going to fill it to the brim, run it 200 miles, and then fill it to the brim again just to check. The fuel gauge is definitely buggered as far as I can tell.

Thanks again :)

Is that wot people who come from Persoa are called then? Are they really really good at pump timing? :D

Damned typist again ... I keep telling her ..... but she still makes that same mistake, even though I promoted her to be my persoan secretary ...!

We can do a good job with pump timing here, that's for sure, but I think most of you could do the same once you had the idea, and the confidence. There's no magic to it, just careful work with spanners, and use your ears.

Too many people are scared to get involved with fuel injection.

I agree with whoever said that garage needs sorted out smartish.
A delegation led by Lord Slob might have the desired effect.

My bloody mam and dad don't think it'll do any better than 17 MPG now either :( I can't convince anyone

FFS have you read any of the posts in this thread. your landies knackered. it needs sorting out. once it's sorted it'll do 28 to 30+ mpg. now stop whining and decide what the feck your gonna do about it.

Good grief!
What do they know?

There are dozens of us here running these cars getting 25+ mpg or better.

Yours is SICK SICK SICK, and needs SORTED!

That's them convinced! Filling to the brim on Friday, and running for 200 miles, then filling to brim again. Fingers crossed it'll do 25-28, but it's not looking that way at the moment.

Just one thing. How many miles can you drive your landy with the fuel gauge totally out?

Don't rely on the gauge their crap and the reading you get has no relation to whats in the tank. fill it up and do your 200 miles then you'll know what your getting once you do keep your tank filled up all the time. based on your mileage and what you know your gettng to the gallon.

my guage works fine.
get underneath it after a run and feel round for wet diesel , it may be leaking.
what does it drive like? is it smoking? what is the temp guage reading? where do you live?

Hi Nobber,

I will have a good look and feel for diesel after I go out tonight - it never leaves any drips on the drive under the tank.

The temp gauge tends to read about half, or just under - but slightly over on high revs (not often), and it has just had a new sender fitted.

It drives well, doesn't like hills, and there is no smoke, just a little bit of white when it starts up.

I live on top of Otley Chevin (well, near enough) - Leeds, West Yarksheer.

too far away for me to take a butchers im afraid , anyone live close who could give it the once over for him?
