I have an 09 Range Rover Vogue. There is a small amount of black oil in the water header tank. I have checked the coolant and it doesn’t seem to be contaminated and the engine oil is clear and has no contamination. Any ideas anyone

Aliens? ;)
Nope, sorry...haven't a clue. Someone sensible will be along shortly. :D
If you suck the black oil out off the top of the tank (use turkey baster or a bit of tubing) does the oil come back within a few days/miles?

I have cleaned the header tank out and run the car a few times and so far there is no oil, however I am afraid to drive the car in case I do any damage. Don’t know what to do

Hold on then, someone with knowledge of the TDV8 will be along soon enough, with some sage advice.

I know just how you feel. I had my OLD P38 for 1 week when things went very horribly wrong. I made the stealer dealer fix it all though so it came out ok in the end.
Trouble is I purchased the car privately so no warranty. The other problem is buying the car has left me a bit short especially with no work at the moment. I am concerned that it may be the head gaskets from what I am seeing on the internet

Welcome.
This is Landyzone, the best community for Land Rover owners on the web.
As a community, we have the Introduce Yourself section, so that new members, like yourself, can post a little about themselves and their vehicle . Thus building on the community spirit of the site.
Which is nice. Rather than a smash and grab approach, wanting help on a first post. Manners are also nice, a please or thank you , when asking for free help, from strangers, who are not paid to, and do not need to, help you. ;)
Any chance of knowing which Range Rover you have? I don't think the Sport, did a Vogue trim, but the Sport is more @gstuart 's field.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend anybody, I appreciate that I am a new member so I am not used to this type of site. My car is a Range Rover Vogue TDV8 on an 09 plate. Please understand that I am just desperate to find out what the problem is. Again please accept my apologies for coming across rude

No worries. All is good. Well almost ;) Vogue is a trim. It is always best to say which model. For example yours is an L322 ( I think, unless Gary says the Sport does a Vogue trim )
I see you've managed to find the Range Rover section. Just hang around in there for a bit, do some searches for your issue. You can narrow down the search terms , if you use the drop down boxes. Someone will come along with possible solutions. As already advised diagnostics is a good idea.

Yes I am beginning to understand, sorry not very good on phones or computers. The Range Rover is the L322 model. Would like to say thanks to all of you out there that are trying to help me.

hiya

wonder if it’s oil from a faulty oil cooler , where it gets into the coolant and ends up in the expansion tank, have replied to the OP in the Range Rover section

bless as always for the tag as indeed try my best by helping others as much as I can like we all do ,

but see this is a L322 FFRR

ref the sport, these are The details I’m aware of so far

L320 from 2005 to 2013 , had a facelift in 2009 and another one in 2012 , Which also had the 8 x speed fitted

easy way to tell between the 6 x speed ( gear lever ) and 8 x speed ( rotary dial ) is if they have the lever or rotary dial so easy to tell

think it was 2014 That it went away from the D3 platform and had a totally new redesign called the L494

trim level , so far I believe they had up to 2009 3 x trim levels, HSE , HSE LUX and supercharged

Then other levels were , Autobiography Dynamic, HSE , HSE Dynamic,

but at the end of the day, never really been able to find 100% a conclusive list of what the trim levels were
