Chain slipped perhaps. Would explain the clanking/not starting

+1 on that....don't see how that could have happened, but maybe somehow chain has slipped and injection timing overadvanced with resultant excessive diesel knock.
I say injection pump timing because, a difference in cam to crank timing would have pistons colliding with valves and it would probably not even turn on the starter in the first place.
It's all speculation at the point until you tear into it and see what's going on.

PS...concerning the noise it makes when you get it going, you wouldn't happen to have dropped anything into the bell housing whiles installing the starter that's getting tossed around by the flywheel, or perhaps even a flex plate starting to come apart as a result.

Right I've managed to get it going with some easy start after a few goes, it looked slightly low on oil on the dipstick so I've filled that up a tad, sounds absolutely horrible when it started like metal was hitting metal so turned it off after about 10 seconds it idled ok at 800 but was very loud and didn't sound healthy at all, not a clue what it could be, would a loose starter when it got fitted cause this noise?
It started once without the easy start after that and then again I had to use it to get it going.

It isn't the starter motor trying to continually engage is it? You got the wires the right way around? Or is tge starter not disengaging? How hot is the starter? Can you hear where the noise is coming from with a long screwdriver?
