Range Rover as a farm commercial vehicle?

Been looking at them too. Always liked the big Amazon’s but the are hard on fuel and would like something a bit better than the 90 to run back and forth to the farm.
If you want reliable, then you don't need a modern Land Rover. The Land Cruiser with the 6 cylinder diesel is no worse on fuel than a diesel Range Rover or D3/4.
Remember, a Land Rover is not a car, it's a hobby, OK for a hard up oldie like me with alternative vehicles, I have 2 P38's to try and ensure there is always one that works, plus I have a Transit if all else fails.

One of the good things about this forum is peoples honesty!

I’m gutted that D4’s have such bad engine issues as one of them would be perfect for me so there I was thinking a RR would do as their engines aren’t time bombs. But from what folks are saying on this thread and elsewhere on the forums they have their own issues like electrics and being so complex. Getting a £70-80k car for less than £10k appeals but it seems they are less than £10k for a reason!

My old 90 TD5 gives very little bother, 232,000 miles and only one clutch 30,000 miles ago, chassis is good, only issue it has is the body is a bit bruised and battered and it needs a new rear rub and the bit the seats are on. It won’t be going anywhere but it’s not the most civilised thing for commuting and with the straight pipe you can’t even hear the radio! It’s remapped as well so it’s great for towing but on long distance hauls the noise can be a bit much. Think I’m gonna put a disco 2 transfer box in it to help on the road or even an auto if I can do it for sensible money.

Landcruiser Amazon’s are quite dear but there is a reason for that. One pal has one and loves it. I might look into the other land cruisers a bit but not sure if they’d re as well made.

There have been a couple of D4 owners that have installed the RRS TDV8, which would be a fantastic combination.

The d4 sdv6 had it sust with the bearings but there's a dispute about oil viscosity as they rattle on start up. The three m6 bolts that hold the massive waterpump can snap off as well... Causing a whole host of breakage as it tumbles to the belly pan....

That sounds really interesting. I didn’t know that was possible to put different engines in D4’s because of all the electronic gubbins. I did see a D4 for sale with a wrecked engine so it would be ideal for a project like that.

Jeez, if your life isnt busy enough I wouldn't complicate it;)

The RRS and D3/4 are very closely related, so it is possible to mix n match some components, the RRS even had the TDV6 when it first came out, getting the TDV8 after a couple of years of production.

I'd go sorted P38 but then again I would ;) The TDV8 if looked after can be a reasonable motor the issue is people getting ones that have been neglected and/or abused, ya never know what your going to get even with FSH which to be fair in most cases isn't worth the paper its written on.

With 640nm available at 1800rpm there is not really a better tow car, yes they're a nightmare to own as said they're a hobby and not really to be relied on 100% if you have a 2nd car then thats handy ;)

As for being used as a farm vehicle that can be done but the leather and thick pile carpet probably won't appreciate it. ;)

Oh and they inherited rust from the L322's relative "RRC", like a genetic disorder it skipped one generation "P38" and continued on the L322 LOL :D

I have to admit to not being patient enough to bother with that myself, but the last 3 or 4 minutes of my journeys to home is just coasting on almost no throttle so to me that's sufficient cooling.

I wouldn't just switch off after a spirited jaunt though... unless the cops absolutely insisted.:p

A few years ago I made the cops wait for 3 mins in the pizzin rain till my Evo cooled down :D
But I did fk off from an unmarked popo motor, no blue lights & one headlamp out there was
no way I was stopping, they did pull up with another couple of marked motors. Had a wee chat
& a bit of a laugh he said he didnt expect me to stop then commented how quick the Evo was
they though it was stolen cause of leavin a roundabout sideways whilst passing them on the
outside lane Ooops :oops::oops::D

@Farmer Brown hi. Can I suggest an older L322? I have a 2002 Td6. I've had her 12 1/2yrs, and have probably met and dealt with most, but, thankfully, not all the issues. On these pages. For the first part of our journey together , she ran me back and forwards from south of England to Western Isles, on a frequent basis. I've done the same trip in brand new other top of the range 4x4s and estates. Not a one could make me want anything but my Golden Girl.
Then we come on to the second part of our journey together. I am now in the farming world. I have carried smaller hay/straw bales, lambs, the dogs, feed, and even a ewe at one point in her. I just keep a thick tarp in the back. Only buggers I wouldn't let in is the goats :D She has no issues in the fields. I've used her to pull over vehicles out of fields at horsey events.
She might throw tantrums, but I wouldn't swap her for anything else.

If it helps, my P38 was a farm vehicle before I got it. Although they are all getting long in the tooth now, so reliability isn't what it was. I've got just shy of 270k on the clock on mine. But mine isn't exactly the most reliable on here. Been running it on a shoe string budget recently, so it is suffering for it.
They can do the job, but there is also a reason most of the developing world uses Toyota. They have reliability in spades.
