Would that be the blue wire from the new head unit to the blue/red on the existing loom?
The red/blue wire is the "System Enable" wire from the old head unit and is used to activate the audio power amplifier as well as the two aerial amplifiers. For aftermarket devices, the system enable wire might be shown as the lead to an automatic wind-up and down type extending aerial.
Here's the pin assignments for the existing ISO plugs:-

It should be fairly simple.

Unfortunately the headunit I have doesn’t have the wire intended to turn on the amp installed into the iso plug but the wire is there in the bundle of wires with the two iso plugs. I’m not sure why they didn’t insert it into the plug to make that connection a little easier but hey ho....

All you need to do is join the loose blue wire in that bundle (think it was actually labelled for power aerial/antenna or something but it does the same thing) to the “system enable” wire in the vehicle loom, I think I simply cut it out of the vehicle ISO and soldered them together with a little extra wire to make up the loom length.

That should sort your problem on the no sound front.
 
Sorted. Now to remove the panel

Headunit and cage out.

Two screws pointing up at the top of that hole.

Remove ashtray and coin trays. Two screws behind each one. Remove cup holders.

Carefully pull out central locking switch and the two centre switches above the coin tray. There is one screw hidden behind these either side.

Remove the trim (that you may not have even realised was there) just below the din hole. Two screws under that.

Pull gently!
 
I’ve not currently got around to it but I’m planning on introducing the frame to my dremel and releaving it of the cup holders and hopefully then just replacing the two parts of the frame for the two trays. From looking at it, that should be achievable.
 
I think I’ll be having another go. My first attempt isn’t great. Issues include securing the radio and the bracket securing the existing head unit.
 
I had to remove the metal bracket that goes from the bulkhead to the bottom of the original din hole as it was in the way. There’s 3 rivets into the bulkhead. If you look through the thread I linked in my main thread then you’ll see the bracket he made to support his head unit.

I riveted the brackets that came with the head unit to the facia panel. About 5 rivets either side, it’s solid! :eek::D This however has caused me problems with securing the top of the facia as I have to fix the head unit to the facia before fixing it to the vehicle and therefore am unable to insert the two screws at the top which is frustrating.... I don’t know if it’s possible to get a cage for this head unit or not but that would make it a lot easier.
 
I think I may be able to rescue my first attempt. The good news is the radio works!! . More plastic filler required. Thanks everyone for your advice
 
I have to call pass on that one. I think you/we don’t need one and that it should be a question of connecting the wires and playing with settings.... unfortunately, they have been played with on mine by a previous owner so I need to pull the airbag out again and work out what has been done before I can tie it into the head unit.... I’d be interested in what you work out.....
As far as the head unit side, I think it’s the three brown wires in the bundle with the ISO connectors, think they’re marked as Key1 Key2 and something else.
 
I’ve been looking at options on eBay that sell discovery adapters. That’s until you tell them specifically what the current system is then it’s ‘not compatible’.
 
One more question. What adapter is the best for the steering wheel interface?

I can finally answer this part having eventually gotten around to tackling it. There are two wires from the steering wheel one white and one purple. One connects to the brown ground wire in the main power plug loom and the other to the “key 1” wire from the main power plug loom.

It’s an analogue system that creates different resistance between these two wires depending on which of the 5 switches are pressed/pulled.

On the head unit, go into settings then vehicle then steering wheel switches. Pushing/pulling one of the switches brings up a list of options, select the relevant one from the list and save, repeat for the remaining 4 switches. You can change the use of each switch just by selecting a different option in the list.
