Used RR to go to work this morning, short journey, left for 6 hours whist I went out on a job. Came back, started it, lots of exhaust smoke, engine racing, rev counter not working. Shut it down, restarted and everything was fine. Upcoming trouble or just weirdness? Cheers.

Ive seen other diesel cars do it when they run on thier oil. Rev like mad and smoke badly. Never seen it on a p38 but might be worth checking your oil level isnt high and blowing up the breather or turbo seals

If there is no rev counter and high revs on a diesel, then it's crankshaft position sensor problem.

If crank sensor is faulty and signal is lost engine will take it's RPM readings from number four injector. But engine will run fast and there will be no rev counter. If you remove CPS to check it, on NO account remove the bracket it is bolted to, or you are in deep shit unless you have the special tool to refit it.
