Disco 2 Quick sunroof question....

Got fed up with the Disco raining on my parade so I pulled the headlining out yesterday. Found a broken drain pipe at the front as suspected, and a bonus weep from one on the rear unit. Roof rails were good though.

Now, I seem to remember reading on here somewhere that the drains were only for water that ran off the glass when it was tilted, and not general rainwater when closed. BUT...I'm getting drips through while it's shut, so does that mean my glass to frame seal is duff, or that what I read is not correct?

I can't see how it would get in otherwise, so I suspect it's the seal, but any confirmation would be good.

Yep you are correct their is a simple fix if you don't want to remove the sunroofs first off tighten the x4 screws that hold the glass down I could see water passing between the glass and seal. That pretty much was the final bit of the puzzle for me but to make sure I also sealed around the outside plastic edge of the sunroof just to be sure.

From what I've read, there could be as many as three points of water ingress with the sunroof.

The little drain tube which you've found already, and yes, they drain the sunroof when it's open and any rainwater runs off it into the drain channel.
The seal between the glass and the frame which has been dealt with by @biketeacherdave.
The seal between the sunroof assembly and the roof. This is the normal "hard to find" leak and unfortunately requires the removal of the whole frame and resealing where the frame meets the roof. If the leak isn't too bad, some members have had some success with "Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure" without the need to totally remove the sunroof.

Others have tried all sorts of cures from bathroom silicone sealant to covering the edge of the sunroof with duct-tape and even removing the sunroof completely and welding a patch into the roof instead.

Echo all the above.... Doing same now... there may be a clue on the upper surface of the headlining.... on mine, drains all attached, but you could see staining on the liner around the perimeter of the sunroof, indicating a leak between the frame and the body. Incidentally this was confirmed as once I applied a lick of RTV around the edge of the frame and roof... the leak stopped. I'm going for the full fix and removing the whole frame and applying tiger seal to both sunroof frames. Also have Captain Tolly in the stockroom and will run some along the usual trouble spots on the body as a whole (A-Pillar, Rear Above door etc)

Thanks for replies! I'll get a new glass to frame seal on order. The rear doesn't seem to have this problem, probably because it been used far less, but I think I'll do that one too while I'm at it.
The PO said he'd sealed the front sunroof, but he'd just run a bead of mastic around the frame to roof joint, rather than lifting the frame, replacing the seal under there and then seating the frame back on to mastic.

I also need to check the aircon drains, as the carpets are sodden underneath on both sides, more so on the nearside which can't be due to the sunroof as the leaks from than are on the offside. It's nice to have a hobby....

The air-con drains are high up in the transmission tunnel, either side of the gearbox just behind the bell-housing.
The sunroof drains I believe exit the vehicle under the "B" posts.

Oh really? I'd just assumed they ran down the A pillar / front door hinge post. Now I've fixed the pipe I shall have to get the watering can out tonight...

It could well be the "A" posts, the main thing to note is that the air-con drains pop out through the transmission tunnel.
Maybe the rear sunroof drains come down the "B" posts.

Confirmed that last night, although I can't see the end of the tube. It seems to exit above a box section there.

While I was under there I reached up and twiddled the aircon drains, got about a eggcupful of water out of each one, which might account for the soaking wet carpets inside. Where do there drains run inside the car - can the be got to without stripping the dash?!

Also - what's the part no. for the glass to frame seal on the sunroof? Is it EEQ500010? the usually useful Albrit.de site doesn't mention it...

If you look at my post of 10 July where are the air con drains, at the end of the thread I explained how I accessed the drains inside the car by removing the centre console.
Relatively easy, half a dozen screws only.
2002 td5 auto gs.

It should stop the water getting into the frame and from there into the drain pipes (which are now fixed) - or are you saying that this seal is really to stop draughts though the roof and keeping water out is secondary (because the drain pipes are there?)

It is meant to stop the water getting in yes but almost every bit of research I did about this age old problem other peeps said changing them won't stop the leak.
The main culprit is sunroof drains braking off in the corners all but 1 of mine was broken the next culprti is the seal between the sunroof and the metal skin of the roof it's self. You can remove the whole thing and tiger seal it which is the best long term solution....... I choose not to as I would of had to redo the sun roof drains again so I put sealant around the out side edge.

No more leaks and we've had some proper down poors

Ditto Tiger Seal.... but really annoying was the fact that on mine all 4 drains were intact and functioning, but the during the removal of the frame to seal it to the body, one of the useless corner outlets became slightly detatched from the main lower frame and started leaking!!!!!
