when i was working at lr reconditioners in the 90s we had loads of 3.9s with head gasket symptoms ,so me and very good clever friend who still is, bored the liners out and found cracks in several blocks at that time early 3.9 pre updated water pump they were all on lhs as water pump favoured rhs,after the water pump update that changed they still cracked but often on rhs as well, we talked to the lr engineers who told us it was porosity, not cracking as all 3.9s were fresh castings with thicker cylinder walls ,they werent on any blocks we checked as we cut a 3.5 up to compare
 
Not seen that video before. Typical RPI though.....not so subtely slating Turner engineering & their liners

I had two liners go. After all the preliminary crossed fingers replacements like radiator, thermostat, water pump, expansion tank cap and endless bleeding of the cooling system the motor seemingly ran OK for a while. My tell tales were the temp gauge never reading 12 o clock but 10 to. And then swinging right over to the red light. Two plugs were squeeky clean and the coolant cascades like a volcano when bleeding. I put a short engine in and bit the bullet. Arguably any money thrown at a p38 is financially unsound. BUT. Wotya gonna replace it with?
 
Turners quote circa £1600 including VAT for a top hat linered exchange bare block.

If our 4.6 turns out to need more work, then I'll go for one of them, but only as I can do the strip and rebuild here.

If you have to pay a garage to do the job, it starts to look a bit of a millstone, but as @supapete says, what are you going to do otherwise?

If the basic car is good, then take a 10-year view as we do, if you throw £3k at it and it lasts you for 10 years, then it's money reasonably well spent, you can't take a short term view when spending that sort of money. Our total spend on the Rangie so far is just over £1K including the purchase price.

Our Discovery V8 has done nearly 100K miles under our ownership in 8 years, another couple of years and we will reckon it has paid its way.

A member on here had one fitted by an ex sponsor of this forum, it kept flattening one cam lobe and picking up on the follower, after 3 new cams I Think they should have realised there was a blockage ( swarf possibly ) ,in the oil feed drilling. Something to bear in mind.
