Good morning chap and chapess. I need some help here, im looking to buy a 4x4. The two ive narrowed it down to are 2011 BMW X5 or 2011 Land rover Discovery SDV6 Landmark. I'm tearing myself to bit over the choice, i appreciate they are very different cars, i don't go off road but do find myself in the odd muddy field or green lane, Really want to give the Disco a crack but worried about reliability. Please help. Thanks in advance.

You've asked the question on a Landrover forum, there's only going to be one answer... We're bound to be a bit biased....
Having said that, the x5 isn't really an offroader, its a 5 series estate with more traction and a status symbol. I'd rather have a regular 5 series over an x5 ( i do)
Personally I don't like soft roaders - they give the breed a bad name as they're just as heavy, have less space inside than a conventional estate use more fuel than a standard car and ridiculously don't do the thing they're (supposedly) designed to do.
If you're likely to want to do even one green lane, buy a proper offroader, buy the disco 4
If you're never going to get it muddy then buy the X5. Only don't, you'll look like a cock. Buy a normal 5 series instead, they're a much nicer car.

Well for a start you'll be spending a LOT of money so it would make sense to take your time.
Have you driven both vehicles yet? If no that's the first thing.
Discovery is a lovely vehicle especially in it's version 4, SDV6 configuration.
As for reliability well if you're concerned about Land Rover products, dig a little deeper and you'll find that BMW are not the "Shining Knights" that they would have you believe either.
All modern up-market cars are sophisticated and complex and even though the manufacturer understands them, the garages that look after them are all too often woefully inadequate. Be warned!!
People buy LR products for a variety of reasons: comfort, ability, snob-value etc but rarely for their real abilities. Discovery 4 is one of those rare breed of vehicles that can truly take you wherever you want to go. This can have the effect of encouraging new owners to be a little more adventurous.
In my view BMW products whilst being competent and sometimes innovative, lack soul, lack character. If you don't seek character in your vehicles then a BMW will probably suit you - but if you want "Britishness" in your vehicle go for the Land Rover Discovery 4 - awesomely effective in all domains.

Its Stornaway Grey, Landmark model, its on the GC Motors website. Its got side steps on it which will be coming off and sold other than that its just what ive been looking for.

I got the disco 3 & absolutely love it to bits. Oh and it's one hell of a capable vehicle. The 4 should be much better again. I'd leave the steps on for protection, mine are ok & I do green laneing. I've not ripped them off.......... YET
