I got pulled over today for going too slow on the motorway, speed was 45 to 50 as I wasn't in a hurry and trying to conserve diesel, I was told that there is now a law that says I must show consideration for other road users. I don't think it's fair that I should have to speed up to over 50mph just to please everybody else, what do you think ?

Go on A or even B roads instead then (if you want to go so slowly)?
Going that slow on a an M-Way is likely to cause issues for other motorists IMHO.
But I am sure someone will be along soon with a much better response.

You havnt said what action if any plod are taking, did they let you off with a warning? Or are they going to issue you with a nip ? If they do then contest it in court.

I don't consider 50 to be driving slowly, trucks only do 50 to 55 so they will just have to keep their eyes open and pass me

Twas a warning that I could be prosecuted for inconsiderate driving

To be fair, as a truck driver it can be quite alarming catching a vehicle up that's only doing 45 on a motorway when you expect it to be going faster. Just saying like. Put yer foot down and do one, it's bad enough having Tesco wagons doing 50

As an ex trucker for 40 odd years I agree that I would be an inconvenience but the only other alternative is to travel at ten mph faster that the trucks and that would be inconvenient for car drivers with me stuck in the middle lane doing 60 to 65

Why would you be stuck in the middle lane? I used to do 55-60 in my defender all day long. When I'm towing in my disco I do 60 and there's no massive queue behind. It's just about lane discipline which most drivers have no idea of

OK so as plod would say " words of advice" . Put it behind you and move on.....on a professional note going to slow on a test is a fail also because it can be deemed dangerous and or inconsiderate to other road users for instance doing 40 in a 60 would be a fail if the road in front of you is clear.

Just saying

I know about lane discipline and I don't want to drive my old landy at 60mph just to please everybody else, 50 is a nice speed for the engine and the landy and if the trucks etc want to go faster then use the middle lane and don't come right up behind me so all I can see is DAF in my mirror then swerve out into the middle lane, not as if I'm doin 40 which would be a danger

I hate the way truck drivers get right up yer arse before pulling out.

How accurate is you speedo? You may have been going more slowly than you thought.

Tootling along at about 50 is quite a pleasant way to travel on motorways - particularly with a diesel - but when I've done it I try and find the slower trucks and follow them. Getting into their slipstream will definitely save fuel (which doesn't mean tailgating - easy in a soft top, but open a window and you can find the sweet spot where the breeze drops).

Thing is, speed limits are not compulsory, the reason they fail you for going slow in the test is because they want you to show that you are capable of driving near the speed limit. No blue minimum speed limit signs on most motorways and I think 50 is reasonable
