Not sure!

will be taking the head off on monday night / tuesday morning to check all pistons are standard and then buying the bits from my local specialist (them have them in stock) so they will be standard size rings.

Will that compressor be suitable?

read the last post i did.

Sorry Red, posted before I realised you had posted! Thanks for the replies, will order the tools now. I have borrowed a torque wrench off my mates dad so looks like I am all set! Can't bloody wait =D

Tools Ordered £25.88 with 24 hour delivery (£8 odd ffs!) so should be here by Tuesday morning for sure! A little steep I know, but it's less than I'd be paying to have a garage do it for me. Just got gaskets, rings bearings and pushrods to add on top of that then the job should be a good one!

I hope that all the nuts and bolts inside my engine (ie. head bolts / big end cap bolts) are nice and easy to undo. I had the sump off not long ago so that should be easy enough to get back off.

Thanks for the support :)

Something else that I have just been thinking about is painting my cylinder head a nice dark black because it's starting to look a little washed out. I have some straight to metal / barbecue paint which is heat resistant. Can i just apply a thin coat of that or should I not bother what so ever?

Why not buy a can of bright red engine paint?

Natty!

Some paints dissipate heat.
Others tend not to.

In a 2.5 NA it doesn't matter.

Could do CharlesY, then it would look brand new and feel brand new. The cylinder block isn't actually all that faded to be honest so might leave it, but a lick of paint would really finish the job off wouldn't it.

Would you go as far as saying that I am reconditioning my engine?

Yes.
What you are working on is a SHORT ENGINE, meaning everything below the cylinder head gasket.

If you fit new rings, glaze-bust the bores, fit new main and big-end shells, and new seals and gaskets all round, the engine will be more or less like new. There's not much left, is there?

Take advice on checking the camshaft followers (sometimes callet tappets) which in Landies might be worth looking at. As I say, ask here for advice on that, but if they were OK before, probably leave well alone.

I think you will enjoy painting the engine a really bright red colour. It will look GREAT - a million dollars - and you can say you did it yourself after rebuilding it!

I will never forget doing this same job for the first time, to my Citroen Light Fifteen, in 1964! But that's another story, and Slob will give me a row for a too long reply as it is !

yup, theres nothing better than the buzz you get from firing up an engine that you have rebuilt for the first time, enjoy pos, theres plenty of help on here idf you just ask

there's nowt worst than that spinter tightening feeling you get as you turn the key for the first time and yer hope/pray that the valve timing is correct. no matter how many times ave done it or how many times i turn it over by hand before i start it , am still ****ting mesen incase i've fooked up with the timing chain/belt. hand on head i int got it wrong yet

am still waiting to hear why landies and such don't got independant sirpenshun

I'm not actually going to touch the timing belt just yet. That's a project over Summer which I'll crack on with. Just want to renew the engine, stop the oil leak and have a little bit more power for now =)

Thank you all!
