Pistons look to be coming up good though. I reckon a good clean and new rings is definitely the way to go. Once you start replacing pistons and so on, it starts to get expensive - and that's not what these Landys are meant to be about!

Ive seen and used pistons a lot worse than that mate :) , as long as there not cracked etc and the ring to land tolerence ( checked with new rings ) are good then Id use them again . I see the pistons are standard size too so if the bores are worn at least you can go for a rebore . That is if you want to push the boat out that far ?? .
:)Ive seen much worse too,and used them and theywere fine.What you find in an old diesel isnt as clean and smart as in a bike engine.The shallow valve mark is just where they wer slack tappets or amild belt break.Looks like youre going great guns Paul:cool:
 
Cheers guys, tbh i needed someone else to give me their opinion, i don't want to fork out for new gear if the old is serviceable, i've set a limit on the rebuild price wise and i don't want to go over it unless i have to.

I'm gonna go snot over the rest of the build for abit whilst sipping me lemsip ;)
 
No probs Paul :) , if your not sure of anything just post up a good clear pic and we'll say yay or nay :) . ( sorry if this a case of granny + suck eggs but if your having probs focusing your cam on things up close - select macro ( flower symbol ) on your cam :) ) .
 
I'll remember that Steve, just waiting for me camera cable to arrive so i can post better pics as i'm using my phone atm which is fine for outdoors but abit naff for inside shots.

Gave pistons 1&2 a damn clean tonight, still need to work on the top ring section on all of them, no point putting new rings in a recess which isn't clean...

So the weekend is down to getting the damn crankshaft gear off ( visiting the local landy place to get it done, nice chaps ) and then strip the crank out and give the case a damn good clean ready for deglazing next week.

In the meantime each part is getting cleaned and painted, will look like a black engine with red trim....as they seem to be the only damn colours for VHT paint ;)
 
Got the crankshaft out plus gear and timing case attached, at least it's not so much of a bugger to get it over to the Landy place next week ( working this weekend :( )

Def200tdi turbos look the same as 19j's as they're fitted in the same place but are slightly larger I believe.

You could well be right Paul while since ive seen tdi.I think theyre diferent too as i once posted in another thread.I think the rotor is bigger and its mapped differently too.:)
 
Picked up me bore honing jobby, i may give it a whirl tonight but not in too much of a rush atm as i need to price up and buy replacement bearings shells for the big ends & conrods plus rings, bottom gasket set.....

MOT due next week, so engine rebuild on hold for a week or 2, at least i can paint the block.
 
Finally got the cam out today and stripped it fully, just left with a block, honed the cylinders, will post pics when my i got batts for my digi cam.



If you look at the pic you'll notice that after working on the cylinders, i've achieved a decent cross hatch, but as there is a ' lip ' at the top of each cylinder i can't get the cross hatch to go all the way to the top just underneath this lip. Looking at the cylinders you can see a darker line just below the lip which shows the area not affected by the honing tool, any ideas if this will be an issue?

lips = high miles = rebore

you could hone for a decade and it'd still be there
 
Gave the cylinders a going over with the honing tool, plenty of oil whislt doing it, but can't get it to work near the top of the cylinder due to the slight lip which i beginning to wonder if it's supposed to be there, will have a search.
