I wonder if anyone can offer advice. I have recently purchased a 2003 TD5 however I have already spent over 1500 at a garage and still have problems. Granted the garage I used was a complete rip off and I am going to get advice on what I can do.

Anyway the main problem now is a water leak which I took it into the garage for identifying and repairing. The leak is front passenger side of engine around area of power steering. The garage first told me it was because the power steering lid needed replacing. After taking it back a second time they told me it was the water pump. However I still have the coolant leak? What else could it be in that area? Garage has washed their hands of it!

When I got the car I was worried as sediment was in the coolant tank however the garage assures me it wasn't the head and was pressure checked.

I also occasionally have the oil light come on at startup but is intermittent.

Finally, the rear suspension keeps going so I understand a spring replacement is probably best. Again told the garage to check the suspension I they said there was no problem. Obviously when the car keeps sitting down at the rear there is.

I would welcome any feedback on this. I know I was sold a bad car off eBay but I do want to get it back in working order just conscious of money spent todate and high mileage175k.

power steering lid ?water pump is driven from rear of pas pump there are several areas it could leak there but not that difficult to remove and check,sediment is probably k seal or similar some ones used to hide the issue of leak , oil light should be on till engine starts ?it does seem your garage has bugger all idea find a new one or start tackling stuff yourself one at a time asking for advice and reading up as you go
 
Thanks James. My thoughts exactly, give it a go myself. Just thought someone might know of any other leaks around the water pump area? The water pump was replaced by the garage.

Oil light goes of sometimes but stays on others as well as sometimes coming on when driving. Someone has told me it could be wrong oil used or a faulty switch. Is there any easy way of testing?
 
Water leak could be the O ring between the water pump housing and the engine block

edit: you don't need this bit, just the picture to show you the part its prob just an O ring but big ish job to change.

Check your air bags and around the connections on the pipe both ends with soapy water, check for bubbles, also unplug the electrical plugs on the 2 solenoid's in the compressor box on the nearside chassis rail and check for bubbles coming out of them, The valves leak internally and air comes out them plugs.

Thanks for advice, will have a look. I would have thought the garage would have noticed the o ring when replacing the water pump. Sounds as if you maybe right though.

If it is valves in the suspension are they an easy fix or is it still best to replace with springs?

Any ideas with the oil light?
 
Chances are they used a ****part water pump replacement.

WHen the bearing in the pump fails it allows water to travel through it to the back of the PAS pump, this has a small drilling in the casting to allow for the water to escape rather than pressurise the PAS pump and cause it to also fail.

Money on this being where the water is coming from.

Have you got any photos of the area so we can confirm? Other areas on the passenger side of engine prone to failure are the core plug behind centre of exhaust manifold, and a small rubber tube off the oil cooler....

I hope you got it at a rock bottom price? it's an old car with a high mileage so you will be getting problems if it's not had proper maintenance. Sometimes it's better to cut your losses and move on, sorry to be sounding negative but spending £1,500 on a car you've just bought seems an awful lot to me :eek:

On a more positive note, you've come to the right place for advice ;)
 
Thanks, I will try and get some pictures and put them on later today. I did ask if they used a genuine part as they charged £80 for part and 185 for fitting it.
 
Nigel, it was cheap but I know why. Saying that adding it all up now isn't and I am tempted to cut losses however surely there can't be much more that can go wrong? That's what I keep telling myself and dreaming of the time When I can have hassle free and no cost motoring. Paid 2600 for the disco and some of the 1500 included 4 new tyres so maybe not too bad yet. Just coolant leak and oil light that is worrying.
 
you better check the oil pressure to be on the safe side and if it's good replace the pressure sensor, with gauge inserted instead of pressure sensor you must get these:
Pressure at idle (Cold) 3.0 bar (43.5 lbf.in )
Pressure at 3500 rev/min (Hot) 1.5-3.0 bar (21.75-43.5 lbf.in)
 
Thanks Sierrafery, I have looked into this will any oil pressure test kit do? I don't have one so will need to buy one - are they also very easy to fit to do the test?

any 5 bar hydraulic pressure gauge will do just attach to it a fitting with the same thread as the pressure switch, or buy a new switch anyway as it's cheap and drill trough the old one and clip it to the gauge's hose
