Left my landy with a local garage who has had several good reviews, and quite clearly said to me when i turned up that he doesn't do bodge jobs.

The rear cross member is falling apart and the spring hangers have got holes around them, asked him to have a look at welding the holes and he wasn't happy, so suggested replacing the rear cross member. Fine I says, he gets straight on the phone to organise it, brand new cross member including the rear hangers for £150 from LRP in camborne. Oooof i thinks, thats tasty.

Check on ebay, £163 plus delivery for the same thing! Makes ya wonder!

I paid for it directly though, he rang up though so i suppose that kinda works out for trade price.

Press brake? Googling.......

He cant run much of a business,if he has real overheads then often the discount on the materials make the difference of making it worth doing.Fitting customer supplied parts is not a professional way to carry on,does anything about his operation make you think you are going to get a decent job done ? If there is a fire during the job is he insured ?

I really struggle with this attitude.

As a tradesman I can often get discounts that customers can't. I pass that saving onto the customer.

My overheads are covered by the rate I charge (or not if I fook up a priced job) and my relationship with suppliers is a good incentive for people to come to me for work.

I know many, even most, add on a profit to materials. It's generally accepted practice but just watch the panic on their faces when there's a dispute about costs and the customer asks to see receipts.

To suggest he can't be doing his job properly because he didn't make a profit for making a phone call is outrageous.

I'd suggest he's more likely a man that knows how to get and keep loyal customers

Based on that logic, unless he's charging the earth you're not getting a decent job.

the same thing i have tried to tell my boss's a guy that spends 3 pound a day come hell or high water is better than a guy that uses the firm once a year fo a big order. give the daily guy a good price he will spend mor rather than chase a one off for a small profit.
