Bearings are easy to get, not expensive and fairly easy to replace. If the bearing is noisy, grease will not help a lot, may quieten it for a while.
Beware the cheepo Chinese ones on Ebay, use a genuine bearing supplier

thanks, quieten for a bit is the objective at the mo, theres a lot of black dust on the windings, i assume thats the brushes, or whats left of them.
new alternators arent cheap! and I'm guessing the cheaper copies arent the best coice
