Good morning all,

Im looking at potentially acquiring a D2 Td5, a small history of me, I used to have a 2000 DHSE Range Rover P38.

I have done some searching and reading on the forum, but im looking for a bit more focussed information really.

Having had a P38 im used to scary reliability, are the D2 TD5 a nice improvement in reliability or is it once again a Land rover hobby vehicle??

Looking to buying one, i would prefer an auto, are there any issues with the gearboxes that should be watched out for? Once again coming from the P38 it was a major weakness in the vehicle..

Finally, what sort of spec should i look for or avoid. The vehicle is going to be a do everything second car. So will be used to tow a light trailer, go offroad hopefully and cart the family around on long journies when the space is required.

Further too this, if anyone is around the bristol area and would like to show me there D2 i would more than happily come and stare dreamily at it.

Hi there Langley and welcome to the Disco forum and I can assure you that they are generally more reliable and easier to work on than P38
I've had a number of DII TD5's.

My advice is as follows:

1. Get yourself a top-spec ES. They make for a very comfortable and one that you will want to hold onto for years;

2. Rear air suspension is very easy and cheap to get fully reliable. Budget for 2 new air springs (about 60 apiece) and 2 new ride-height sensors (about £25 apiece) and you'll solve 95% of any suspension issues. The air gives a more comfortable ride and better for towing no matter what anyone else says.

3. Your new car will almost certainly have ACE (Advanced Cornering Enhancement) and this needs careful examination before purchase as the hydraulic pipes have a tendency to rust out a bit like brake pipes but much more expensive to replace. Not a problem if you budget for replacements from outset.

4. Rear chassis rust. This can be expensive to fix so careful checking is in order. They rust from the rear axle, rearwards.

5. Auto gearbox - not a weakness on these cars and have Torque Converter (TC) lock-up in 3rd as well as 4th - but they can be improved with a modified TC at about £250 plus fitting. REALLY improves the driveability overall of the car.

6. If you do your own maintenance, buy yourself a Nano Evo diag. tool.

DII TD5 auto is an excellent every tool giving on average 25-30mpg (depending on driving style of course). Cruises comfortably at 75mph.

If the FSH is just stamps in a book, it's worthless. You need the invoices to show what work was done, or treat it value-wise as having no SH.
