Hello,

My Freelander a TD4 2003, just suddely stopped when running on the motorway. It just died, with MIL coming on.

I have ruled out. LP pump, filter etc, fuel is coming into engine bay and returns to tank. Tried to to leak test on injectors but this results in no fuel at all , I beleve there is no pressure at all in the rail. The engine does not seem to fire at all but it cranks. Before we have had starting problems, but once started ran fine. No there is no sign of it starting, no coughing, as if the injectors does not open.

What should I consider faulty next?Fuel Rail pressure sensor, LP pressure sensor, Pressure regulator, HP pump or are there anything else I shuld look over before handing it in?

Regards

Martin

If the engine ecu doesn't get a signal back from the LP pressure sensor, it will not operate the injectors.
This is to protect the high pressure pump which uses the fuel to lubricate it by not letting the engine turn faster than cranking speed.

Ok thanks, how do I verify if the LP fuel sensor i working properly?

EDIT:What is the partnumber for the LP fuel sensor?

ok I have changed the LP sensor. Still nothing, no pressure on rail, what is the next thing to aim for? The car is a 2003 and have 350000 km / 220k miles on the counter..

I had the same thing happen with a reading of low pressure on the rail.
After being advised by the aa it was my low pressure pump....I changed this at the services they had retrieved me to. Alas still didn't start so got it transported back to my local garage where a leak back test proved a faulty injector.

Ok thanks, but i do not get any pressure on the rail, thus no leakage (in returns) can be seen. So i first need to get the pressure up and then be able to test the injectors, but something is stopping the HP pump delivering..

How are you checking this? Are you reading actual values and dtcs? If your low pressure pump is ok your high pressure pump may be buggered? Have you done a leak off test or are you saying cos its got no pressure you haven't? If its got a low pressure dtc, it doesn't mean there's no fuel there! It just means there isn't enough to function or that it thinks that! Or are you saying the fuel rail is empty and no fuel makes it that far?

You have 2 lp pumps 1 at the back and one at the front both fed via a fuse and a relay. . . . .so with a helper switch ignition on [dont start it] put your hand on front lp pump and it should vibrate tween 10-20 seconds then stop [it stops when presure has built up on the presure switch] if it keeps vibating then its not gained the presure , if no vibation at all could be relay or fuse or a fooked pump or pumps . . . . .worth a check before you start getting all tecknickle :D another good test is to disconect the fuel line on the last lp pump and spew it in a bucket , should **** out good any foaming or poor flow could be pumps ,but dont forget your fuel filter could be clogged. . . . . . .hope this helps :)

Hello,

I have done leak tests before, and then there is always small amount of fuel coming into the pipes. But now nothing, not even a drop. This is why I suspect the pressure in rail is not enough, and then I wonder what can cause this. Perhaps it is the HP pump that is gone or the pressure regulator on the HP pump.

I have not read fault codes, have not got access to any reader. But the engine lamp is on all the time exept for a short flash when i turn the key to step 2.

Suppose some sensor is not correctly providing info to ECU. Am i in need of fault code reset to make it work?

I need advice...

Get yourself a cheap eobd code reader. It's a generic standard now so it should read the codes for you. Better ones display actual values and graphs! You need to know what the code is which should hopefully point you in the right direction or you'll end up guessing and that can be expensive! Hope that helps! Or be cheeky. If you have home start call the AA or RAC and get them to plug it in;)
