Poor running

Have you got the distributor vacuum plugged into the pipe above the mixture screw?

The oil breather to the one near the base. This should go to a t-piece and then one pipe to the air intake hat and another to the rocker case breather. The breather pipe on yours looks to go off towards the driver's side I think you may have that plumbed in wrong - i.e. breather to servo which wouldn't help! Any chance of a picture of how you're plumbing all the pipes together you may just have them crossed up...I'll try an get a picture tomorrow...

It's definitely a carb off a defender but couldn't tell you whether a 2.5 or a 2.25..

To eliminate other problems its probably worth checking the breather is clean - wash it out in petrol.

If it is leaking it may just be your gaskets, they look home-made. I've tried that before myself and they nearly always end up leaking! You should be able to get the gaskets from craddocks or paddocks, I got about five I think they were pennies each part number ERR4385.

I think they're meant to be fitted dry but I used sealant on the one below the spacer - unlikely to come off again. I wetted the one between the spacer and carb with a very light smear of grease to make it more likely to seal nicely.

I doubt it is the idle screw leaking as petrol would come out but it could be leaking around the throttle pintle or the accelerator pump. I think that was what was up with my old carb it had just worn out and didn't always return to idle well.

It may be worth getting a rebuild kit and giving it an overhaul part no RTC5863 - I think that includes some bits round the throttle pins which may help...

Hope it helps. It should run well when its all going right. I've just been "playing" with my set up which ran well but quite rich, a smaller idle jet has helped....there's always something to mess with!

Thanks for the reply.
The dizzy vacuum is plugged into the small pipe below the fuel intake ( bottom left of last photo)
The pipe above the mixture screw goes straight to the floor, assumed it was an overflow.
The pipe above the dizzy vac pipe again is going straight to floor, this one was going to the breather connecting rocker cover and carb top but had a few issues with float height after I fitted electric fuel pump, was filling engine up with petrol.
Just had carb in bits, every thing looks ok going,to rebuild in a min and fit. Tomorrow, will take some photos and try and show were every thing goes.
Again thnk you for the info it really is appreciated.
As you say always something to tinker with, have a few more jobs waiting after this one.
Thank you Dean

Forgot to say the servo pipe is coming staigth off the inlet manifold, should be getting good vacuum , pipe ain't very good though so will change that before rebuild. Going to order carb rebuild in min aswell.

Doesn't sound right...or I'm more hungover than I thought.

Here's a pic of how I've fixed it up.

The spill pipe should go either to a proper charcoal filter thingy or to a point behind and higher up than the carb. The solenoid opens when the engine is off and vents the float chamber but if you're on a slope you risk peeing/syphoning petrol out!

Where does the pipe from your rocker breather go. Some folks let it just hang down to the road but this doesn't properly purge the engine of gasses a slight vacuum is needed. I tried this on the way to France - it made the car stink, the engine run worse and the rocker cover leaked everywhere.

If you must do that then the bottom pipe on the carb just needs to be blocked somehow.

If your carb is overfueling your leccy pump might be too high a pressure I got a little diaphram regulator like this: Sytec Pro Flow Fuel Pressure Regulator - Demon Tweeks I got it for about £20 from a local boy-racer shop. I got some funny looks from all the chavvy boys in their pimped Corsas when I parked up in my battered landy and started fitting shiny things to it....

Will get you some pics tomorrow but gotta go and get drunk again now..

Cheers mate have a good night just opened a bottle my self so calling it a night . The adventure will continue tomorrow

It's alive!!!! Striped and rebuilt carb last night and just got round to fitting. Started first twist of key, a few little tweaks of mixture screw and she's mint.
Connected all pipes like advised and she better than ever.
Big thanks to everyone who has helped, think I need to get the beers in when we meet.
This doesn't mean everything works as it should, don't think that will ever happen, but does mean I can go play. Going out to find a big dirty puddle to drive though now it's been over a week since she's seen mud.
Thanks again Dean.
