Hi all, having an issue with the brakes on my Discovery 1 300 Tdi.

Was approaching MOT time and decided to renew all the Discs, pads and rear calipers as they were somewhat scored/past their best. (Did the same job on the g/f's Disco not long back)

Despite new discs, pads and new rear calipers i can only describe the braking as poor (Just above minimum on brake tester) i know Disco's aren't know for excellent braking, but the contrast between mine and the g/f's is like black and white!

So far i've tried 2 servo's and another vacuum pump (all seconhand) as it feels like there is little or no assistance, the brakes work but you need the legs of a downhill skier to brake hard. Servo appears to being working in that the pedal moves down if starting with your foot on the brake.

Anyone know of anything else i can check, could it be the front calipers at fault?

Cheers

Glenn

was the vac pump and servo's fo known working standard?. Was there any ticking come from the vac pump. Maybe worth checking the fronts won't cost owt. Lastly are the rear calipers on the right way as in the bleed nipples at the top

Both Vac pumps appear to work ok and providing vacuum (whether it's the right amount ??? seems about the same as the g/fs)

Latest fitted servo was from a working discovery so should be ok

Calipers on the rear are mounted with bleed nipples at the top (although i did have to go and have a look to check!)

Will check out the front calipers when i get chance, sourcing some secondhand ones just in case (they'll do till i can get some new ones if they do turn out to be the cause)

Any other obvious possibilities to check?

Cheers

Hi All

James, pedal pressure is good and firm just doesn't apeear to be making it to the brakes!

John, bled the calipers a few times and new brake fluid pulled through all did seem to have a problem with the fronts. Drivers side front was a real pig !

Muddy Wheeler, yep degreased all the discs before fitting them.

Have started to noticed a slight pull to the left which leads me once again to the fronts, just can't figure why this would lead to poor response, stuck pistons perhaps???

Cheers for all the thoughts feel as though i'm getting somewhere.

have you checked servo ,if you put your foot on pedal and press hard and keep pressing hard while you start engine ,pedal should sink a little as servo assists,,if it doesnt check vac pumps working,no leaks in vac pipe system

Flexi hoses!!!!! I had an issue with mine diving to the left under breaking. A real hand full if you had to break hard. After months of keep looking at the callipers it turned out to be a flex hose had laminated on the inside so i was trying to force fluid through what was like having a squashed pipe. I changed both front flexis and its never stopped as good! They are for nothing too! So its worth a punt.

Dirt. good shout never thought of flexi hoses clogging up.
Groggers. If there's no one around to help you take a bit of ply take out one brake shoe. put thinner ply in caliper press brake see if pistons move. if not then there seized or like Dirt said blocked flexi hose. Havin said that if your bleeding them then the hose should be ok.
