is coolant level lower in expansion tank ,there will be signs eventually but might not show on short journeys at the moment ,is air filter wet ?
 
Consesus seems to point to head gasket. I've had plenty of help with problems on my landies from the peeps on here. If however you think it's the inlet manifold, take it off and get it pressure tested. That's assuming it's water cooled. I genuinely don't know if it is.
 
The inlet manifold is water cooled - the feed pipe is on the right-hand side of the manifold.

My money is on the head gasket having failed - as usual on these engines.

But what do I know - I drive diesels.

The warning signs have been there for 6 months.

Topping up the coolant on a daily basis can't go on for ever.
 
Thanks to you all you have been very helpful I'm doing the HG, Inlet MG, CAM belt and water pump today

It was just how well it was running that made me think it wasn't HG but may as well do it.

It doesn't have coolant circulating around the inlet manifold just through it.
One is the outlet to the expansion tank and has a jiggle valve( I knock this out altogether as it can jam building pressure up and causing a leak) the other blanks off the head and is where most leak from. I read about a guy who plugged this in the head with a block of shaped aluminum and liquid metal.
 
a simple thing to make if you cant find a leak is to get hold of another expansion bottle cap drill a hole then push in a tyre valve then seal with silicon it will end up like this




fit to the car and put around 15 psi via an electric or hand pump then search for the leak



just a cheap handy tool to have in the tool box

not my idea i learnt it from an mg forum member so credit to him cheaper than buying a kit :D
i just asked at a local tyre dealer for a valve and got an old cap from the scrappy when i was there silicon i got from work but if you have to buy some i think toolstation or screwfix do them at £1.99 a tube

Ideas like this is the reason I come on here. Learnt a lot over the years. Peeps experience and knowledge is invaluable. Oh and of course for help. If you have 2000 landrover owners in a group, chances are they have seen, experienced and overcome the vast majority of problems. Thanks all.

That is a good tool think I will make one, and I might knock out the valve mentioned before
