My poor landrover has been sat on my drive looking very forlorn for a while now :(. I think the front axel is done in.... My problem is that my mechanic hasnt got a transporter or a trailer big enough to get it to his garages....can anyone help me out with any numbers of people with this kind of equipment that I can hire?? I have looked online but the transporters all seem to be capped at 1.4 tonnes which is not gonna hold my car!! I'm getting desperate....PLEASE HELP, it would be a travesty to have to sell her as a non-runner cos I couldnt move her!!! I'm in the lincolnshire area and any info would be appreciated :) Thanks.

first of all: where exactly are you? there maybe a landyzoner in the next street that can help??

second: what is the exact problem with the front axle and why cant you fix it yourself or drive it?
 
Hi there, I am in Spalding, south lincs. I am not sure of the exact problem I cant get the car to the garage for him to diagnose it properly!! We drove it last week and its obvious that it is not safe to drive (my mechanic also said that i might damage the automatic gearbox if I do). To your last question I wouldnt know where to start...(I am a childminder not a mechanic:biggrin1:LOL) my husband usually fixes anything but we dont know what the actual problem is....there was mention of axels and diffs etc etc....the car needs to go on a ramp to see.....hence why I need to transport it about 3 miles to the garage. Thanks for your reply - I hope someone sees my plea!!
 
(ALso my husband works away and I can see this will not be top priority.....thats why Im looking into it myself!!!) :)

don't limit your search to just car transporters - many twin and tri axle trailers are more than capable of carrying a Disco
 
OK there are car transporter trailers that are rated to over 2 tonnes - the weight of your vehicle.

Also the Discovery 1 or 2 has a 3500kg towing capacity. The weight of the trailer isn't going to be more than 1 tonne.

So, if someone can get hold of a Disco or defender etc and a twin axle trailer with the right rating then you're in business.

The other idea I have would be to phone around all the local recovery people in your area, explain the problem and see how much they would charge to drop the car off for you. I bet it wouldn't be much.
 
probably the quickest cheapest option is just to fit a used axle, phone the local scrap yards you may well find one that will supply a used axle and fit it. they will be able to transport the car aswell.
 
does it actually drive?
can you describe whats happenening / what you did when it stopped behaving and what sort of noises your getting.

edit - oh, and what type of landrover is it?
 
Thanks everyone for your ideas, I am getting on to it today I am determind to get it sorted now!!

nrgserv, its disco 3 '03 plate TD5 GS 2.5 7 seater.

it was making strange whirring noises which I thougt might be the wheel bearings, husband said 'its fine, as long as you arent losing power...' so carried on driving it. The noise coincided with acceleration. After about 50 miles it had a massive jolt like something had dropped out from under my feet (!) then started to shudder, pulled over pretty sharpish after that...!!
Did drive it last week to see if the auto gearbox would change up to first but before it got up to any kind of speed it was creaking and groaning so much we thought it best to put it back on the drive.
 
not sure on the disco 3, with the diff locks or lack of them but, (and someone correct me if i'm wrong!)

get your hubby of mechanic to remove the front propshaft on the drive. then remove both front drive flanges. lock the centre diff (this is bit i'm not sure you can do on a d3).

idea being you eliminate all drive to the front axle. if drives ok, then its a diff / cv related problem. if it dont drive, then the problem lies in gearbox or rear drivetrain.

reason was asking if it drives, was to actually get it on a trailer / recovery wagon. spalding's a bit far for me to trailer it for you, would cost you too much in the diesel for me to get there an back.

Yeah its a disco 2 sorry I had 03 in my head and typed it wrong....so shoot me!!! LOL!! Thanks again ngserv I'll pass that info onto my husband, I wish you were closer so you could just move it for me!!!!
Have had a quote from a recovery service £75 +VAT waiting for scrappy to get back to me....at least if I get it to the garages it will be looked at!!!

Do the d2's not have the diff lock high/low range lever?????. Wondering if one of the diff bearings have given out on you. I picked up a complete axel for mine d1 300 tdi for £30 off ebay, althou i do supect that it will be alittle more for a td5.
