Please help me i have just bought my first freelander of what seemed like a very nice geuine bloke! How wrong was i! When i test drove it there was a rubbing noise that sounded like the brakes where it hasnt been used for a few weeks! Drove it 50 miles home and its still doing it today. I checked all the wheels for maybe the bearings there all fine. Then i googled it and done the tipex on each prop shaft test drove it a mile and they still seem to be in line if they have moved then its mm s. How do i no if i need to change the vcu or ird or both? how easy are they to change? how much are they? are there any test to tell me exactly what it is? Can people please help me asap as i dont want my partner to drive the car and make it worse. We have driven it 30 miles today aswell it doesnt make the grinding noise at higher speeds. I cant say how long its been making the noise as i only bought it lastnite thanks alot

Right ok, early models pre 2002 when they changed the ratios on the ird and rear diff have a lot of problems. The 1.8 petrol K series have a real problem with head gasket problems as well. Do you have an option to take it back. The only real safe buy is a 2002 onwards TD4. One thing to try with yours is to remove the prop shafts and run in 2 wheel drive and see if problem go away. Yes i no about the headgasket proublems and that was all done bill to prove it. No option to take it back. I am on a low budget so theres no way i can aford a td4 mate. How easy is it to take out the rear prop. So can anybody help me with theys proublems please please

hmmm, if it rubbed when test driving why did you buy it? the 1.8 has loads of problems as stated, and if you check the forum. i would try to take it back.

If you let us know where you are located one of us near you may be able to help in regards to removal of props, its not to difficult.
As regard to cost of replacement. £250 for vcu and £650 for a ird that is cost for the parts only and its not a easy job to do with no experience.

how are the rear tyres worn? a saw-toothed wear pattern often indicates a duff VCU.

As yet you haven't described any definite symptom of a seized VCU. Your rubbing noise could simply be a £15 propshaft bearing.
I think you are falling victim to scaremongering.
We have two Freelanders, one 1998 and one 2002, both over 100,000miles and love them both. We've had no major transmission problems, though have replaced the front rear diff mount on both and the prop/vcu bearings on the 1998.
Great little cars. Get yours diagnosed at a Land Rover specialist so you can sleep at night and enjoy your car.

I have to agree with that. A garage tried to tell me my IRD was goosed and they could replace it for me, that was 22000 miles ago now and theres still nowt wrong with it. Theres alot of bull**** spouted where the Freelanders concerned.
