Plastic Scrivets

Are these intended to be reusable, or are they just throwaway?

No matter how careful I am, most of them end up getting chewed up as they are removed.

Do plastic tools make them come out any easier, or are they supposed to just be expendable items?

I find a cleanup with a brush, then some WD40 helps. If they have a Philips head, then a well-fitting screwdriver (not a PoziDriv) may undo then - ensure the grooves are clean, then give the handle a thump to set it into place.

If that fails, bend a couple of old flathead screwdrivers into prybars.

To answer your question, I think they're meant to be single use. If you do ruin one, I've found that a plasterboard-type Rawlplug and normal screw will often fit.

I've got a lot of Toyota trim rivits that fit the Freelander. They are much cheaper than LR scrivits.

Anyone know of cheap replacement scrivets for the plastic scuttle (I think that's what it's called) under the windscreen. I had to take mine off and half of them broke.

try ebay the ones on the plastic scuttle ,well you have to gently pull the middle out then they come out easy but I have ruined some many times

I always find right angle external circlip pliers very good at removing the mushroom type plastic scrivets

Ain't nuthin cheap about £1.49 per rivet and that's the best I can find on ebay

I use a sharp chipboard screw for them. I gently screw the screw into the small hole until the centre section rotates with the screw, then pull at the same time as turning. This lifts out the centre with very little damage, so it can be refitted.
They aren't cheap, hence I try not to damage them!

There'll be an equivalent that will be much cheaper. It might not look exactly the same but who cares if it saves a few quid.

Yeah, will have to do some measuring to see what I can find. £1.49 each is just daylight robbery, I'd rather do without than be complicit with such theft.

I found that Toyota (linked above) scrivits fitted the Freelander arch liners the same as the LR offering at about 100th of the cost. Like most LR stuff, the prices on these things has shot up since Tata took over.

With the screw out ones, if the Philips head is knackered then you can take your £500 Snap-on screwdriver, heat the end and press it into the plastic to "fix" it.
