planning a v8

Hi all. Im looking a5 buying a 99 (V) Disco V8.
Anyone know the mpg to expect and also what to watch out for in one?

12 MPG I guess, on a good day. Bit better on motorways. My place in Spain to my friends in France 1200 miles, all motorway 90 litre tank, takes five tanks..

My V8 is a manual and will crack 22-3 mpg on a run,17-18 round the houses locally,much less if driven like I stole it !!

It sounds like the D2 v8s are a lot better on petrol than the D1....

Just checked mine from a full tank,this last week using it locally its done 18.7mpg,as said manual box and climate on !!, 9 mile run each way to work and a little round town but not much.

DI with GEMS varies (especially if mods are done) - 12 to 15 mpg about town - 18 to 20 highway. D2 = with Motronic = 18 mpg in town (better torque via the intake manifold setup but less to work with in tuning [GEMS much better in that department according to Mark Adams])

BTW - according to Mark Adams - GEMS is still leagues ahead of even the latest ecu systems so you can do a lot more with it if you want to real mess things up (LoL).

If you can - find out if engine has ever been over-heated and/or head-gaskets replaced - if so - avoid like plague as odds are good that you will inherit a dropped or beginning to drop liner (starting to 'channel')

Depending on age of motor - check for valve issues; bleed down and comp tests are a good idea.

Check for leaking sunroofs and any codes that may be latent I the ecu (bring a good code-reader along with you)

Here in Canada - I think 98 was the last year of the Disco I and it was declared to be the best D1 out; not sure what a 99 Disco is in UK - sorry.

GO FOR IT! I have 99 v8 and I get about 14 miles / gallon in town and on a motorway. I use LPG and I haven't noticed any difference.

If that is 14mpg on petrol then we have a problem Houston

Be very careful,a cooked v8 will end the life of the car,its a £500 pile of scrap if the motor dies.Bit different with a TD5 as they are more worthwhile fixing and s/h engines are doable.Unless you are very lucky in finding a warranted s/h v8,(Not many breakers would be brave enough to give a warranty on a v8) you run a huge risk of the replacement being shot too.
I am well aware of individuals love affairs with their DII v8's,but all too often I have to give bad news to cash strapped owners of boiled up v8's..... Not many LR independants would recommend aone as a good buy.
