Maybe it's just me and if it is then I apologise.

I like piccies, be they landscapes, projects or pets, but some of them are really big, and if you're using a mobile phone to view LZ then it can quickly eat up any data you've got on your tariff (unless you're on WiFi) but even then it can be fairly slow.

I know some LZ'ers are already doing this, but can a sticky fred be made somewhere asking peeps to upload thumbs of their images so that the viewer can decide whether they wish to view the image in its full glory.

:)

Er, Sorry Shimmi, but I'm confused ( easily done TBF )...  :D

If you've got no data on your contract *, then why does it matter how much data you use downloading "full" pictures whilst on WiFi?

Genuine question :) - is the tinterweb so different on the IOM ?

* - the answer to such a poor contract is given in post #2 :)

It was more for those of you who do use your mobiles to view LZ, not me. :)
I'm just thoughtful like that.
I put £20 of credit on my SIM (Calls and texts only) back in March and I've still got £15 left

Timely post for me this Shimsteriom. Given my project thread is gathering quite a selection of images, I was going to post a thread asking for this kind of feedback. I simply host my images and put the direct link in the post. I pondered whether this was appropriate given the auto-download and lack of user choice in the matter. Forum search has given me little info as most seem to prefer Photobucket used in the same way. Your post has given me the first nudge towards editing everything into LandyZone hosted thumbnails. Does the LZ readership prefer this or are my 1200px wide, roughly 300kb files OK viewed direct from the post?

300k files seem to be fine, it's more the pictures taken on phones which can be several megabytes in size. :)

Its a funny old world. I am on another forum (bike building related) and I used to put thumbnails inline in my posts so people could determine whether THEY wanted to see the full-size image.
But folks complained that it was "another step" and flipping backwards & forwards between the site and the image hosting site was annoying.
Its one of those "all of the people, all of the time" issues.

Interesting. Did you go back and edit your posts or adopt a new method from that point? Like you say, we'll never please everyone but a general consensus within this forum would be nice.

I began using the "direct link" weblink that meant they got the full-fat pictures (5 .. 15Mbytes each).

Fair enough. Not many on that forum concerned with their data usage, then.
That's a very good point. Part of the reason for direct links is that the site owner cannot afford to host the pictures on his ancient servers.
Here is seems direct posting of image files is ok. I'm always happy to do whatever the "host" ask for.

Absolutely. I'm sure LZ have no issue with it as it saves their hosting limit and bandwidth or having to increase either as the forum swells. The wider question is user functionality. In my opionon, direct link is best and...
I detest thumbnails, browsing on a phone they’re not clear enough to decide whether to view or not, so end up clicking every one !

that pretty much says it all about thumbnails. :)

That I did not know. I do not have a mobile phone as I have neither reception or need, but I will do as you ask for future photo postings.:)
