Hey guys,
I have a problem with my 2004 3.0 td6 .
Every time I put it on " P" it doesn't hold, I mean the car will move backwards or ffw depending on incline. It doesnt move smoth , it make funny metal noises ( click, click, click) until finaly the car stops .
At the moment I need to use my E-brake so it wont move.

Please help if you can .

P is not a parking brake, sounds like the pawl in the gearbox has worn or broken or possibly the cable needs adjusting assuming it's cable operated on the L322.

Yes but being used as a park brake has obviously taken its toll. It's not there to hold 3 tonnes on a hill.

If you use it as a parking brake and apply it before the car has completely stopped you can soon knacker the parking pawl:)

I did that once at about 1.5mph and there was a violent stop... what happens if you engage it at speed..?

I can't believe this conversation is even happening or that people know so little about 'P' on an automatic. Whoever even told you it was a park brake????? If you brake the parking pawl you will screw the transmission as all 'P' does is lock the transmission. However this is not sufficiently strong enough to hold a normal car let alone a tank like a range rover. Treat your vehicle with respect. Read the handbook.

Can't tow auto in P...the gearbox is locked up on the Pawl...

The L322 will not let you engage P until the vehicle has stopped, there is a lock solenoid to prevent the gear selector moving that far...

Also on the L322, you have to put your foot on the brake to get it into and out P and N....although you can go from N to D above a certain speed for Ratio changes...

Is a manual gearbox in 1st strong enough? Or does the same logic apply?

Bit fierce!

I would not normally use a handbrake in an auto: doesn't make me a killer!
