L322 Parasitic Drain Fuse 49

Hi everyone

Really hoping someone can help before I take it to the stealership. I have an 02 plate L322 4.4 petrol that has a 1.8 amp drain resulting in my battery going flat rather quickly. I have taken it to my local and highly recommended auto electrician who couldn't tell me anything I didn't already know and recommended I go to Land Rover.

If I disconnect the battery and then reconnect it, the drain disappears down to 0.03 which I am assuming is the normal amount and suggests to me that a device is not turning off correctly. After a large amount of fuse fiddling I have been able to get the drain to drop from 1.8 down to 0.4 by removing fuse 49. In an attempt to discover which module, connected to fuse 49 is causing the issue, I started disconnecting any media/satnav related cables in the boot. The majority did nothing to the drain however 3 separate cables did reduce the drain and with all 3 removed the drain reduced to 0.4. I'm not sure what two of the cables / connected devices do so I have included pictures below, the third is the SatNav unit which is a MK3.





If anyone has any suggestions of what is causing the issue or even narrow it down it would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone knows what the connected devices (that I have unplugged) are it would help my research if you could let me know. I'm happy to upload any other images if required.

How long are leaving the car to 'Sleep' before checking the amperage reading??.....the Sat Nav unit can take 3-4 minutes to sleep, and each time a door or the boot is opened, the unit wakes up again.

Also, before removing power to the Sat Nav drive, you must wait for the the little red light to go out else risk bricking the unit.

The big silver unit at the bottom is the BM54 Audio Amp unit....there is also in the back there the Video Module for the Sat Nav screen too.

Thanks for your reply. I'm waiting 15 - 20 mins until the light next to the gear selector goes out.

You also have to wait for the Sat Nav drive light to go out too...although this should only be after 3-4 minutes at the most!

Is there any sign of dampness or corrosion in the back corner there...the L322 is notorious for leaks into that corner, ruining all the gear in there!!

Fuse 49 as you know feeds the Audio equipment, chiefly the big silver box (the BM54 unit) so I'd be tempted to pull it out and check it all over for any signs of it possibly getting damp.

Most common battery drains on the L322 are the Final Stage Resistor in the blower motor, the headlamp wipers not parking correctly and the Alternator going south....

I have had a good look for any water etc but I'll remove the BM54 tomorrow so I can fully inspect it.

Check the bonnet switch as well. Very common problem. I just disconnected one, and the standby / sleep mode is now 50mA as it should be.

0.4A is not fully sleeping !!

if it's fuse 49 i had this problem in january, mine was caused by water getting into the various audio units in the boot, mainly the phone module, DSP and and the sat nav, the give away on mine was the speakers started crackling, check for any water in the units at the back, even leave them unplugged for a few days and see if the problem clears, if it does remove the units place them in the airing cupboard to dry out before reconnecting, and buy the land rover splash guard that goes behind the units to stop water and costs around £7.

cause of the leak could either be rear 1/4 window or as with mine tailgate seal.

Thanks for your replies, I have removed everything from the boot (far more fiddly that I was expecting) and there is no sign of any water damage. Apart from a couple of dead spiders everything seems perfectly fine. I have noticed that occasionally the on-board computer option on the head-unit isn't available but this could be due to the frequent battery removal. I'm hoping that once the bigger drain (fuse 49) is sorted, the smaller 0.37A drain will be easier to fix or magically fix itself.

Hi there

I know some time has passed by but did you sort the drain problem as I have exactly the same issue? on 2004 Vogue TD6
