Good morning all,

I'm getting close to being in a position where I can re-paint my series Landy and I've been looking at paints...

I think I'm going to go with Pastel Green and I have looked at a couple of suppliers, namely The Paint Man and Paddocks (HMG paints).

I'm planning on spraying the paint using my compressor, but I'm by no means going for concourse here, shes a very tired multi-coloured mess at the moment, all I want is something that is all the same colour, reasonably hard wearing and with a reasonably good finish.

My query is, the paints from Paddock are considerably cheaper than the paints from TPM - £15.54 for the Paddock paint and £26.95 for the equivalent TPM paint. Now I'm often of the belief that you get what you pay for (buy cheap buy twice etc) but is the Paddock paint really going to be that bad?

Any thoughts or advice very much appreciated.

I have used the paint from Paddocks and I think its good. It went on well and gives a good finish, without directly testing with another brand I couldn't say how it compares 'like for like' but I think its good value for money and will use it again.

ive recently been painting rear door and inside bits with HMG pastel green either brush or gloss roller , i added a bit of white spirit which thins it and helps give a shiny finish. Seems fine to me havent used paintman stuff as yet

is the paddocks stuff enamel or cellulose?

recently sprayed my 3 in a grey cellulose, surprising how much thinner you get through cleaning the gun etc.

for a hardtop - with side windows - I used c10 litres of paint and 10 litres of gloss thinner via a spray gun inside and out plus 5 wheels. must have used at least 5 litres of standard thinner for cleaning etc. try to spray as much as you can in one go to minimise the amount of cleaning.

next time I shall go for 2 pack

I used the paddocks paint for both of mine and it is fine. Seems to have lasted well considering it is red which always fades to pink! However I purchased the white roof paint from a local paint supplier based on the local industrial estate that was mixed to order. It worked out a little more expensive than paddocks, was significantly cheaper than paint man but was a better quality enamel paint. I didn’t notice a differance in the finish, but noticed it was better when applying it (I used a roller). It was thicker and had better coverage and was easier to apply.

H Marcel Guest are a good paint company.
Been going years and do lots of specialist coatings.
Their colours are good Land Rover generic colours but they ain’t spot on. By spot on I mean perfect matches. Not far off but not bang on.
Mr paint man has spent the time and money matching the colours to original vehicles and that is what your paying for. Or at least that’s why they charge what they do.
If you want 99% perfect you can save a few bob. If you want it 100% as it should have left the factory then you’ll have to pay.

I'll second that! The Paddock HMG paints are good, but they don't match very well with the actual Land Rover colours. If you are painting all of it that shouldn't be a problem. I painted my last series 3 pastel green and very good it looked too! I spray painted the sides, roof and wheels with their Limestone, and brush painted the rest of it green. Thins with white spirit IIRC, so nice and easy! I've heard that some have said it dries a little too hard so chips easily, but it was fine for me!

Coming late to the party....

I buy from paint man and also paints for trade. Both were good quality and bronze green in satin settled down very nicely on my lightweight and marine blue on a S3.
