I bought a none running p38 range rover vogue 4.6 running lpg. Thor engine
Was told it would turn over but not start.

Got it home it had spark & fuel.
Next job was a compression test.
None at all. The engine had been rebuilt at sometime not to long ago by the look of the parts but I guess not very well.
The engine had been stupid hot at some point as the knock sensors were melted.

Also had had a problem with a coil pack.
A ht lead had been burned out & around the spark plug was filled with ash.

So stripped it down & replaced a melted piston & a damaged liner.

Rebuilt the engine with new shells, rings etc

Now engine back in & wired up but wont start.
There is no spark at all.
Theres fuel going to the rail but stops at injectors.

1 thing I did notice on rebuild was the crank sensor connector had a piece of tin foil forced in, which I removed before plugging it back into the loom.

Now things ive checked

1, becm is syncronised
2, there is no break in wire from crank sensor to ecu
3, fuel relays
and a few other things.

So before rebuild had spark & fuel but no compression now compression but no fuel or spark.

Any ideas before I burn it.

Thanx for any help

1, becm is syncronised

Do you have diagnostics to read the BECM settings / Motronic ECU ? as J says you need to make sure that the code written in the BECM is the same as in the ECU. If thats good I would be looking to probe the crank sensor to see if you are getting a signal at the ECU.

new update got an obd2 code reader & its saying no faults.
i disconnected the maf & icv & tried to start & it still says no faults.
any ideas on why it wudnt leave a fault code?

problem sorted & explained why the car was for sale & what problems it had.

the original problem with the car im guessing was no spark.
they fitted a new crank sensor using the spacers provided.
they still had no spark.
to get around this the foil was pushed into the crank sensor connector, which inturn supplied a continuous spark.
this fried the coil pack & caused the ht lead to melt.

now not sure if they got the motor running & it then overheated & melted the piston or if they didnt do a compression test & just tried to fix the spark problem on a knackered engine.

the fix was simple removed crank sensor & checked gap.
wasnt right removed spacers & started 1st turn.
just a bit of tidying & got a nice new engine & gearbox ready to run.

big thanx to j the range for the help
