P38: LPG vs Diesel

That's becoz those tractor boys are a loyal bunch.

If you want to spend an arm and a leg get a doozel, if you don't mind spending an arm and both legs get a V8.

If you want to get from 0-60 in 10 seconds get a V8, if you want to get to 60 in about a week and a half get a doozel, simples:D

If you want to get 35+mpg...get a diesel.

I had a classic on LPG. By the time I had driven to the place to fill it up I might as well have not bothered and just used petrol. It did run nicer on LPG however. My current Rangie is a P38 dhse 1999my and it is brilliant. Okay, I have had a few issues and spent some money but I now have a lovely comfortable motor. I recently cleaned out the intercooler and intake manifold and I reckon she is as quick as any other P38, chipped or not. Incidently, she runs on 100% home made biodiesel.

So how much should I budget for?
I'd ideally like a well maintained early P38 diesel auto. Not too bothered about minor cosmetics (small dents/scrapes), but do want a nice well kept interior and some decent MOT. The only bit of spec I particularly want is cruise control. Would I be right in thinking I would have to get a DSE then?

Or a DHSE

Iv got a 2002 4.4 v8 and it's cracking. I don't drive it like a saint, but I'm not a boy racer either and I get a calculated 14mpg out if it, if I drive it really nicely I get 16mpg, but gas here is 67.9ppl as apposed to 134 so I'm gettin equivalent of 27.5 which i think is prety good and if I drive nicely then i get 31.5.

My mate has the 3l doodle and gets 26mpg tops

i have a p38 4.6hse fitted with a prinz multipoint lpg system. its been on the car for 6 years now with no problems ( **** i wish i hadnt said that  ) it has an rpi 130 litre twin tank installation which leaves the original petrol tank in place and no loss of boot space. filling stations are more readily available now and lpg is 69p litre where i am near milton keynes . it returns 15mpg on a motorway run and around 12mpg around town so pound for pound equivelent to 30mpg motorway 24 town on petrol as lpg is 1/2 price of petrol. just to add my ten pence worth :D oh and it has been fitted with rpi tornado chips and double s sports stainless quad outlet exhaust ;)

Too new. I believe they came out later in the run?
It would be getting added to my classic insurance, so has to be over 15 years old.

DSE with HSE spec appeared in 1999 as an experiment, Land Rover soon realised they would sell, so continued the build and called it the DHSE.

I opted for a Diesel for my 3rd P38....

Having had the V8's previously, and then down the line when situations changed, being forced to sell them to cover bills and the running costs breaking my heart, I went for an LPG converted Classic....

This was great until I couldn't fill up with LPG due to being to far from a LPG equipped Petrol Station on occasions, this would hurt the wallet until I could get home again to fill up....

When the LPG system failed (only once thankfully) the cost of running it on petrol for a few weeks was horrendous.....

Then some light fingered C*** nicked it and then trashed it, then burnt it out....nice....

When SWMBO agreed I could get another Rangie, we went through the figures and a Diesel and LPG running costs came out almost equal....until She pointed out, what happens if you run out of LPG far from a LPG equipped Petrol station and you have to run it on Petrol?? or what happens if the LPG system develops a fault and you have to run on petrol for a few weeks??

The thought of getting another P38 and then having to sell it again as the running costs were to high would really break my heart again, so I choose a diesel.

She runs beautifuly, a tad slow, you have to get the engine over 2200rpm befoer the turbo comes on song and starts to pull appreciably, but then again I am not bothered about burning people off the lights...I own a Range Rover...I have nothing to prove to anyone....

It has been chipped/remapped by Janspeed according to a receipt in the folder when I bought it, but I have not had this confirmed....although give it a foot-full and she takes off like a scalded whippet.

It cost me just under £4k with a FSH (confirmed), new MOT, fresh service, 6 months tax, 12 month 4* warranty covering everything (read the small print). Only one fault - Blend Motors.....

I average 26.2mpg so far with a good mixture of country lanes and Motorway driving.

She is a big lumbering beast but will get you there and then back again, not to quickly, but as Rolls Royce would state: 'Adequatly'.
