Hi all, I've had my P38 for just over a week now and have just checked the selection of low range on the auto box. Having checked in the handbook on how this is done, I am getting the symbol ( looks like two cogs ) on the dash accompanied by the audible warning, but nothing else. This should change to the letter L and the beeping should stop. Is the gearbox broken??? I left it for about one minute.

Probably the first time it's been tried since new LOL Go back to High and see if it works, then try low again. Otherwise it's motor off and also check the ECU.

Thanks chaps, I assume this is something that will A, not be within the DIY remit of a 'two amp', that's myself, or B, be damned expensive if I took it to the garage?
Regards Nick.

usually t/box faults are either t/box ecu or motor on rear of transfer box

Hi all, I'm also having the same problem, but I don't get a cog light, I just get bleeping and flashing on the H shifter, so I got under thr car and got power to the motor and it turns, intact it changed from high to low! And it took some messing to get it back into high range. So if the motor is working? It must be the ecu how do I check that and where is it? Thanks in advance colin...

Ps sorry to jump in but just didnt wont to start a new thread if one is already on.

Quite often the fault is corroded connectors in unused wiring. Worth a good nose, wiggle and clean before you spend any money.

The transfer box ECU is under the passenger seat and is a known failure item. Can sometimes be repaired if you are good with a soldering iron and can remove and replace burnt transistors. Cheap enough on Ebay.

If I may jump on this thread I have a question, before I changed my Air Suspension everything was working well, I had the L and the 2 Cogs on the dash. Since they changed the Air Suspension, I NO LONGER have the Cogs sign but have the L on the dash.

This said, they told me (when I changed the Air Sus) that they tweak the Car's computer, since the car was set apparently too low (height), it also resulted in me loosing the the car warning light Blinking features when locking the car (they restored it since).

Anyway how can I

1. Test if Low Range is working
2. Can they really tweak the car computer to remove this Cogs warning?

1) Select low range and see if it works.
2) Not as far as I know and why would anyone bother? Check lamp has not blown, if you have the L on the dash the odds are it's working.

I reckon whoever did the work had a battery problem which has corrupted some settings in the BECM. If you have your EKA code, you could try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes:)

Yeah, how stupid of me :D... Indeed if in L the Car is moving like any other 4x4 in Low Range it means that the Car is fine. And no EKA code, maybe the light is indeed dead, after all I had to change one of the odometer light recently... Will check this before going to ski this week coz where I am going I will DEFINITIVELY need the downhill mode

I just drop the car at to the Maintenance at a RR Specialist shop for Break Oil replacement and this morning I tired the L Range. Beside the usual "clonk" noise from H to L I have a small rather disturbing noise on the rear when selecting a few L Gear "another clonk" then, after a while in H I tried it again and surprise this second "clonk" noise vanished, the car was moving like it should and L and only the usual Clonk noise when switching from H to L, 20km later with the Technician we did the same test and same stuff (Usual Clonk, and no other worrying one)... But still no Light when changing from H to L on the dash, but the L appear just fine and the car run just fine like every other 4x4 in Low Range.

I believe, and this need to be checked, that this car never has to use in its life L Gear and the "small rather disturbing noise on the rear when selecting a few L Gear" that I had only when the car was cold was due to that...

Anyway I will see Range Rover after my ski trip to check this light thingy. If you have any advise you suggestions on the things I have to check please let me know

PS Thanks for all the help !

On my similar car 95 4.6 HSE the loud clonk appeared the first time only after getting the Hi/Low gear change to work now all good.
The H-Gate lights flashes during changes & High or Low briefly displayed in message centre when engaged. Low change to L and then to whatever gear you select if in manual mode.
Pressing Manual/Sport button and thats briefly displayed as well depending which range you're in.
NO other lights on dash and this seams to be correct per hand book.
Read the hand book and you may find everything works just fine.

Thanks for the reply but I do not have this at all

I had it when I tried several month ago when I took possession of the car, but since they changed my Air Suspension this "The H-Gate lights flashes in message centre" No longer appears. I remember it well it was blinking in RED before while changing from H to L.

However, and excuse my somehow limited english, I am not sure to understand what you mean by : Pressing Manual/Sport button and thats briefly displayed as well depending which range you're in.

When you select a drive gear in Low Box, you will feel the car rock as the 'box takes up the drive strain, then you realise your foot and all is well....

Often times the clonk happens if you select Drive gear without foot on the brake (or not enough brake pedal pressure) or the propshaft U/J's need greasing as it casuse looseness in the drive train....

unless it is a real loud clonk/bang....which would indicate something wrong, ensure you have your foot on the brake with good pressure until you feel the drive gear taking up the strain, before you realise the brakes....

Thanks, I can no longer reproduce this 2nd noise, maybe this time I am breaking properly.

Also I will check what you said "propshaft U/J's need greasing" when I am back from Ski. I am sure it can be done by anyone without having to go to the dealer, but what kind of Grease do I need... And sorry to ask but what do you mean by U/J ? And to make sure the propshaft if this thing correct? Screen Shot 2012-02-24 at 6.34.45 PM.png
