I was looking at mine and although the heat shields are in good order, the bolts holding them together look rank.

How easy would it be to undo the down pipes and lift the heads with the manifolds attached?

Then a case of grinder to the heat shield bolts o_O

Just a thought. I've dealt with heat shields on many 4 pot engines and sometimes I had to do as above :confused:
 
I've read this is possible on a forum somewhere. Space would be sooooo tight though.

Are you able to get to the manifold bolts with the shields on though?

After spending about 2 hours trying to undo those bolts on mine, I just smashed my heatshields off with a lump hammer and cold chisel. Then wrapped the manifolds when they went back on!
 
I seem to remember it being damn tight in there and IIRC sure there was a bolt down by the steering column that was hard to reach even with everything off. I'm also sure someone said you could remove it with the steering column in place but not with my hands or sockets. Maybe their sockets move in extra dimensions.
 
When I changed my steering box (don't ask) I had to remove the wheel arch liner and I seem to remember, with the road wheel removed, that I had a pretty good view of the side of the engine, manifold etc. Of course it helped that the steering shaft wasn't there but even if it was it's got to be better access than from above. I can only presume that it may be the same on the nearside as well only without the steering components.
Just a thought.
 
the tricky is bolt is the lower manifold bolt on number 8 you can get to the manifold bolt with a flexi on the socket, however, if you pull the heads with manifolds on youll need to secure the heads to loosen the manifold bolts.

the headshield bolts may seem rotten but check to see if you can get a 7mm socket on them
