P38 Gearbox problems Please Help

So 8 months ago i bought my first P38 after 2 classics and a disco.

She's an R reg auto 2.5 DSE with 115000 and Ive loved her and travelled in her an effortless trip to snowdonia and many other trips.

Anyway a month age went to start her and BONG gearbox fault on the dash and limp home mode when driving. So first thing i did a level check running, neutral, warm topped up.

BONG Gearbox fault so i take it to R and E landrover the guys were really great diagnostic check done solenoid one problem so i thought i would change the gearbox they also said it maybe the ECU (the one under the passenger seat).

So the bay of E i went, bought both the items and after lost of swearing and grazed knuckles they were fitted.

BONG:wtf: GEARBOX FAULT im now having a little man cry and in need of some help i want to enjoy my lovely P38 but shes making it really hard right now.

Please Help.

Why would you change the box and ECU for a solenoid fault?

Sorry i changed the solenoid 1 and that didnt work so i changed the hole box

Gearbox oil level is checked COLD. Very important to do it cold. Start engine move through gears, neutral then check level. But never when hot.

Hi Ed,
i know this sounds a bit strange but have you tried turning the car off and restarting,i had/have a fault very similar to this,but not every time i start the car???
If i turn the ignition on and off,then do the same again,then start the car on the third turn it shows no fault,till the next time it flings a hissy fit.
After speaking to Petie-a landyzone member-who had exactly the same fault,he suggested removing the engine ECU/ECM behind the battery and unplugging the connector.Then clean and check all the contacts and squueeze any loose looking crimp or spade connectors,plenty electrical cleaner and a blow out with the airline,and problem sorted .At least for a while anyway.Still working fine for Petie when i last spoke to him,and worked for about 2 weeks in my case,so i think i may still have a bad connection which i will investigate further.
Hope this helps ,and definitely worth a try as you can do it yourself.
Remember to diss battery first

Same here, when my battery doesn't feel at its best I have the same warning, I just have to start off and on again (a bit like that Have you tried turning it off and on again - YouTube) and "voila"

+1 again, A friends of mine's transmission fault on his Vauxhall Carlton was a duff rectifier pack on the alternator causing noise on the electrical system, should have come to see me before stumping up thousands on a new transmission (which didn't cure the fault obviously.)

Hello Ed,

Good to see you on here (it's Simon from Boscombe). How are you getting on with it? Have you had chance to check the various voltage outputs and earths?

I'm still thinking of getting one myself so would be good to know what you find.
