Hi all,

I have removed my diesel injection pump in order to have it rebuilt and recalibrated, and whilst doing so (which was a nightmare owing to the following) have noticed that at least two of the bolts in the engine mount bracket that connect to the engine below the injection pump have sheared off. The pump was very problematic to get off because of this, and the engine has dropped very slightly on the one side.

I need to remove the engine mount in order to try and remove the sheared bolts from the block, and then refit it all, however I don't have an engine hoist to support the engine. Is it acceptable to support the engine underneath the sump perhaps while I remove the engine mount?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

If you spread the load with decent timber and dont jack the thing up, just support it, it should be fine. The worst you can do is apply a small"point load"

The M51 is a heavy old lump so I'm not sure, using a stout piece of wood to spread the load I have done it on other cars. Need to watch very carefully if you try it. Wammers would know if it's safe to do.
Hope you used the sprocket holding tool when you removed the FIP

Great stuff, thanks for reassurance. Just wanted to know if it was possible without breaking anything :)

Yes ill definitely be airing on the side of caution with it that's for sure! Fingers crossed it works out!

I cranked the engine round to TDC, used the flywheel locking pin and then used the pump removal tool to push it out.......hopefully that's all I needed to do?

I cannot remember where I supported mine when I took the engine mount out but nothing happened when I did and I used a jack and some wood. I've a feeling I may have had one jack where the bell-housing joins on and another with some wood under the front edge of the sump or similar. No doubt you'll find somewhere.

A bit of wood to spread the weight and it will be fine, after all the sump can take the weight of the engine as you can sit a hole engine on the floor with out anything under the sump.

Perfect, thanks gents.

Pump arrived back today from Diesel Bob/Ribble Valley Diesels, so I'm preparing for the weekend now......fingers crossed!
