P38 diesel transmission or rev fault

I have the p38 2.5 diesel auto.
I have an issue I think with the transmission. It seems to over rev and I have to really rev it to even pull away
and is totally gutless as though it's a 900cc and drinks fuel like a shark. Its has had the gearbox oil and filter changed but is still the same. I'm not mechanic minded whatsoever but wonder if it's the maf air flow meter at fault? Or any other likely suspect

Just unplug MAF and see how it runs. It will default to stored settings if unplugged and run OK. MAF is only on the later models with EGR

Was the gearbox refilled while it was running?
It should have been;)
 
Depends on the year, the early 38's had a dipstick and the later have just a level plug on the front of the gearbox oil pan. :)
I just checked and it is year 30/03/99. It's been this way since I had it and it's currently sorn but I want to drive it again and get it sorted when I get back to UK on 23/03/23. The previous owner spent quite a bit on parts however he was mechanical minded but not electrical

When I had my gearbox changed a few years back I had a dipstick fitted. The gearboxes are the same its just the sump is different. Just fitted an older type sump to the new box and voila I had a dip stick. Makes life a lot easier
 
ATF Dexron 3 as stated in Rave. Has as previously been said follow correct filling instructions
Thank you mate. I'll get some of this. When they say fill when running and run through all gears does this mean drive it after filling or stationary parked with foot on brake selecting 1,2,3 and reverse while stationary and running to lubricate the gears?
 
Engine running, foot on brake, into reverse and hold for a few seconds and then proceed through the rest of the gear lever positions and back towards park in the same fashion. Leave it running and recheck gearbox oil level.
You should have next to nothing coming from the level plug.
Refit plug and stop the engine ;)

I would add that final filling has to be done with the engine running and after running through the gears. If you stop the engine, ATF will pour out.

As Mark and Data say above but engine and gearbox must be cold
