So, what I've discovered.
The above chip in the instrument cluster holds the mileage data and probably other stuff.
If you remove this chip and plug the cluster back in, and run the car, it resets the BECM mileage to 0.
You can then refit or solder the chip back into the correct cluster. Clearly, this has been done before here.
The plot thickens.
