Must have been a while ago then, because SP3 is no longer an automatic update from Microsoft. And without it windows update WILL NOT work. Installing XP and SP2 is not a problem it is on my XP disc. But windows update WILL NOT work on SP2 as it used to. Support has been withdrawn. That is why you have to download SP3 separately even with an Intel processor. That download will work with Intel but NOT with AMD. Support for SP3 is being withdrawn next year. So windows update will not work on SP3 either after that.

So there you have it !!!!!!!!! looks like your :5bbeatdeadhorse5: wammy they wont listen to you ?????????? Me ?????? I can only just about know how to turn the f******g things on :confused::confused: but hey ho . just thought i'd put my pennyworth in , good morning to everyone , !!!!!!!;););)

Did it about 18 months ago. Not bothered about support being withdrawn and I will not be updating from XP to 7 or 8 anytime soon.

Support for SP2 ended July/13/2010. So your reload must have been before that date. Support for SP3 ends April/8/2014. If you are planning up grading to 7 or 8 and your XP computer is before 2005 Intel or 2003 AMD i suggest you run the windows 7 advisor compatibility test first. You can't run a windows 8 compatibility test unless you have windows 7 loaded. You may find your computer does not support 7/8 or both. If it won't support 7 it will certainly not support 8. :)

As I said, I will not be updating, windows is the software equivalent of an L322, I still run Win95 on one computer. I'm using Android some of the time on my tablet, shame it will not run on a tower as it does all I want on a day to day basis. Might take a closer look at Linux.:)

Missed the NOT bit sorry Keith.:doh:

It will be interesting to see if XP support actually does stop, it was supposed to end some time ago but Vista was such a disaster that it had to be continued, it's not that long since Microsoft gave a free copy of XP Pro with every computer ordered with Vista Pro, I think that also happened for a while with 7 too. After all, 7 is only Vista with some of the bugs fixed and a few pretty pretty extra's. Win 8 by all accounts is not going too well either. Win 7 & 8 are so pathetically slow after a few months use that it's hard to believe any professional organisation would want to use them. My Dell Tower came with Vista, it would not run happily on our home network so it soon got binned in favour of XP. Win7 runs OK on the network but has many of the irritating features of Vista, drives my missus mad on occasion.
Our next step at some point will be to switch to large android tablets.
