.net is backwards compatible so just install the latest from MS.
I assume dot net v2? Think they're up to 5 now.

Not if it has never had netframework installed, my old laptop was on SP3 but no netframework, since installing it it updates along with the rest of Windows.Just needs Netframework. Will not run without it. As long has he has XP service pack 3 he can just go to windows update and let it do it.

Any version from 2.0 and upwards will do.
Read it again Tony, I said it was on SP3 but had never had netframework. If you don't have service pack 3 you cannot download windows updates.

It will download fine manually on SP2 as long as he goes for version 2Yeah i know what you said. What i said was IF he has service pack 3 he can download it from Microsoft. If he hasn't he can't. He said it was an old laptop if it is only at service pack 2 updates will not work.

I have found this fix for HP computers with AMD processors...
Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors. | HP® Support
I guess it would work for other brands...

There you have it, the problem is with AMD. With my Intel laptop it was possible to manually download net. I have also done a disc wipe and reinstalled from the original windows disc, it happily performed all the updates including SP2, SP3 etc automatically, it took several hours though.
